The New Actros L with Futuristic Cab Design
Sep 30, 2025 at 1:51 PMHyster introduces a new camera for pedestrian detection. It complements the Hyster Reaction™ driver assistance technology system. The camera accurately detects pedestrians at a distance of up to five meters through a 110-degree field of view. The system automatically warns the forklift driver when it detects a pedestrian.
(Frankfurt) The system is available with acoustic, optical, and optional traction warnings. When a pedestrian is detected, a voice announcement indicates that a pedestrian is near the forklift. A light on the display also shows in which zone the person is located. Traction alarms go a step further. They automatically and gradually slow down the forklift while the driver maintains control of the vehicle. This deceleration effect is intended to attract the driver’s attention so that they can avoid the detected pedestrian by braking and/or steering away.
“The situational awareness of drivers is a critical factor for the safety of pedestrians and forklifts. With our continuous investments in Hyster Reaction assistance solutions, we aim to provide drivers with additional support for cautious operation,” says Daniel Heap, Manager, Product & Commercial – Technology & Connected Fleet at Hyster. “With the pedestrian warning solution, we pursue our goal of providing easy-to-understand and user-friendly technologies for drivers that work reliably in real-world applications – whether in lumber yards, construction sites, or heavy industry.”
Extensive photographic data from working environments were used to develop the pedestrian detection system. The system adapts to various lighting and environmental conditions and can be used both indoors and outdoors. The system is designed for a maximum driving speed of 8 km/h. This gives operators sufficient time to recognize warning messages and respond accordingly to avoid contact.
The camera is mounted on the rear side of the forklift, away from the forks. The warning signals are deactivated once the identified pedestrian has left the camera’s field of view or the forklift moves forward and away from the pedestrian behind it. The system is available in several configurations, either with only acoustic and optical alarms or additionally with traction alarms that activate speed reduction.
Latest Addition to Driver Assistance Technologies
The pedestrian detection camera is the latest addition to the Hyster Reaction driver assistance technologies. Utilizing information about the working environment and forklift status, they warn the driver and adjust the performance of the forklift. The solution was introduced internationally in 2021. Since then, the technology has been in operation for more than 24 million operating hours across over 8300 forklifts.
