Rhenus Switzerland with 14 million CHF more revenue
Jun 21, 2025 at 3:28 PMOn the nationwide Day of Road Safety on June 21, 2025, Mercedes-Benz Trucks drew attention to a particularly vulnerable group in road traffic: pedestrians and cyclists. Especially when turning, starting, and in unclear situations, serious accidents frequently occur – often in urban environments.
Mercedes-Benz Trucks relies on intelligent assistance systems that can specifically mitigate these risks: With the new Frontguard Assist, the further developed Active Sideguard Assist 2, and the Active Brake Assist 6, Daimler Truck offers a powerful safety equipment that can help actively prevent such accidents.
“We develop technology that can compensate for human weaknesses – especially where seconds and centimeters matter. Protecting the most vulnerable in road traffic is our responsibility,” explains Dr. Rainer Müller, Head of Product Engineering at Mercedes-Benz Trucks.
The answer: intelligent assistance systems that can react to dangers in real-time – before the driver sees them.
Frontguard Assist can detect what is hidden in front of the truck
The Frontguard Assist monitors the area directly in front of the vehicle with radar and camera, which is difficult for the driver to see despite mirror and camera systems. Pedestrians, children, or cyclists who are present there – for example, at bus stops or pedestrian crossings – can be detected. In the event of an imminent collision, a visual and acoustic warning is issued.
Active Sideguard Assist 2 protects when turning right and changing lanes
The Active Sideguard Assist 2 can detect other road users on both sides of the vehicle when turning or changing lanes. In addition to the known warning function, the system can also actively intervene in the braking process in critical danger situations to prevent a collision – for example, with a cyclist on the bike lane next to the vehicle.
Reacting early: Active Brake Assist 6 can detect pedestrians
The Active Brake Assist (ABA) is now available in its sixth generation. The latest emergency braking assistant can now perform an automated full brake down to a standstill at speeds of up to 60 km/h in front of crossing, oncoming, or lane-keeping road users – a significant safety gain in dense urban traffic.
Technology as a contribution to Vision Zero
With these assistance systems, Daimler Truck actively contributes to Vision Zero – the goal of completely avoiding traffic accidents with fatalities. The company pursues a holistic safety approach: from its own accident research to predictive assistance systems to driver qualification.
In use in series – already a reality today
All mentioned assistance systems are already available in current vehicle series from Mercedes-Benz Trucks – including the Mercedes-Benz Actros, the eActros 600, and the Arocs. Mercedes-Benz Trucks aims to support the driver as effectively as possible within the system limits when operating the vehicle. However, drivers remain fully responsible for the safe operation of the vehicle at all times, as legally stipulated.
