Swissport Expands Cargo Capacity at Euroairport
Jun 7, 2025 at 12:41 PMAt the forefront of the warehouse quay in the Niehler port in Cologne, something big is currently taking shape in the truest sense of the word: On an area of about 1,500 square meters, the port operator RheinCargo GmbH & Co. KG is developing a heavy cargo terminal in collaboration with the company Colonia.
(Köln) “The topic of oversized and heavy transports will continue to gain importance. In the future, for example, many components will be needed for the renewal and expansion of energy networks. To relieve the already heavily used road infrastructure and to ensure as sustainable a transport as possible, shifting these goods to waterways and rail is an important step. We are preparing for this with the trimodal facility,” explains Marcel Beck, Head of Port Sales at RheinCargo.
In the first step, a crawler crane from Colonia with a capacity of up to 130 tons has been permanently installed. Here, oversized and heavy goods (GST) can be directly transshipped from the inland vessel to the train or truck. The close cooperation of all companies in the HGK group, especially with HGK Shipping GmbH, offers potential for further growth.
Portfolio in the Port Optimally Complemented
“With the new heavy cargo terminal, the existing service portfolio in the Cologne-Niehl port is optimally complemented. We are pleased to contribute to the further development of the location by providing the appropriate infrastructure and creating the conditions for future-oriented logistics solutions,” says Angelika Lörks, Head of Port Real Estate at the port owner HGK AG.
