Kick-off for the First Estonian-German Port Days in Tallinn
Apr 22, 2025 at 7:22 PMThe Craiss Generation Logistics is further advancing the expansion of its logistics network and is expanding its strategic collaboration with a leading manufacturer in the mobility sector. In this context, the logistics provider is opening two new locations in Augsburg and Munich, with a phased commissioning planned by the end of 2025.
(Mühlacker/Augsburg/Munich) With this expansion, the company is responding to the increasing production demands of its customer. While the Munich location is directly integrated into the production supply, Augsburg will serve as an external logistics center with extensive storage and transshipment infrastructure.
“With the new locations, we are continuing our successful strategy in the field of production logistics and creating an efficient connection to our customer’s manufacturing,” says Michael Craiss, managing partner of Craiss Generation Logistics GmbH & Co. KG. The decision to choose Augsburg as the location for the logistics center was based on economic and logistical factors. The logistics provider has moved into two halls that already offer modern storage infrastructure. The location will be expanded in two phases: The first hall, covering 10,000 square meters, is currently in the implementation phase, and initial test goods receipts are already being executed. With the gradual commissioning of the second hall, full regular operations will be achieved: The complete ramp-up to 20,000 square meters is planned for the end of 2025.
Michael Mantel, head of project development at Craiss, says: “Munich is an expensive place – this applies to housing just as much as to logistics properties. The pricing conditions make a relocation to nearby locations like Augsburg economically sensible.” The modern storage infrastructure and the favorable connection to the A8 motorway enable a cost-efficient and flexible supply of the plant in the Bavarian capital.
Craiss has already successfully implemented the concept of the external logistics warehouse for the mobility customer in a comparable project. “At the Austrian location in Ebergassing, we already operate a logistics center covering over 40,000 square meters for the same customer and have proven that our external logistics solutions can be successfully integrated into their production processes,” explains Mantel. These proven experiences now serve as the basis for the new locations.
Specific Functions of the New Locations
The Munich location is directly integrated into the plant supply and takes on central tasks in production logistics. These include goods receipt, unloading with crane technology, storage, and just-in-time delivery of raw construction components for the rail industry to the respective production areas in the plant.
The external logistics center in Augsburg enables efficient material management and flexible control of delivery flows. The supply of the Munich plant is carried out via a shuttle system with articulated trucks, ensuring timely deliveries several times a day. The goods are picked, loaded, and delivered to internal consumers in Munich upon arrival.
“We are talking about a deep integration of material management into our customer’s process landscape. Especially in the rail industry, the logistical requirements are particularly high – from timely deliveries to strict safety and quality standards. Our experience from comparable projects helps us meet these requirements,” says Mantel.
Safe Handling of Complex Components
A key component of production logistics is the safe handling of complex components. The range of components to be moved varies from small parts to 23-meter-long components for passenger cars, locomotives, and control cars. The parts spectrum includes interior components, cables, electronics, batteries, chassis components, windows, doors, and transition elements. To meet these specific requirements, Craiss is investing in material handling technology necessary for handling heavy and long-format components.
In addition to establishing modern storage and transshipment areas, Craiss is investing in specialized crane technology for the safe handling of heavy components. At the same time, the workforce will be increased to meet the rising demands. The gradual expansion of the workforce at both locations is planned to reach a total of around 75 employees.
Strengthening the Role as a Strategic Partner with Expansion
Production logistics for its customer. The company continuously evaluates further expansion opportunities to provide flexible and scalable logistics solutions for the industry in the long term. Michael Craiss emphasizes: “Through our proven concepts and close coordination with our customer, we create a highly integrated logistics solution that ensures both efficiency and process reliability.”
