Demand Planning of the BMDV for Inland Shipping Sparks Criticism
Feb 8, 2025 at 7:27 PMCargoBeamer, a leading logistics company and operator of intermodal terminals that promotes the shift of freight transport from road to rail in Europe, has secured financing of up to 65 million euros as a combination of equity and debt with Orion Infrastructure Capital (“OIC”).
(Leipzig) Together with 50 million euros from existing shareholders and 90 million euros in public grants from the German Federal Railway Authority and the Swiss Federal Office of Transport, all of which were raised in 2024, CargoBeamer has secured a total of 205 million euros in growth capital over the past 12 months.
CargoBeamer is a pioneer in climate-friendly logistics solutions and specializes in connecting road and rail. The patented CargoBeamer technology allows semi-trailers to be automatically loaded onto freight trains in just 20 minutes – nine times faster than conventional crane terminals. Utilizing rail connections between logistics centers in Germany, Italy, and France results in a reduction of CO2 emissions by approximately 85 percent compared to diesel-based truck transport. At the same time, it helps alleviate congested highways and address the significant shortage of truck drivers. By 2032, the addressable market for medium- and long-distance road transport in Europe is expected to reach a volume of around 88 billion euros.
Construction of Two New Terminals in Domodossola and Kaldenkirchen
The funds from the financing will significantly support the construction of two CargoBeamer terminals in Kaldenkirchen (Germany) and Domodossola (Italy), which will enable efficient and environmentally friendly transshipment of road freight to rail. Following the first CargoBeamer terminal in Calais (France), which opened in 2021 and has already demonstrated the efficiency of the technology, these locations will be the second and third facilities of the company in Europe.
“CargoBeamer’s proprietary technology will play a crucial role in promoting the shift from road transport to rail, aligning with our goal of developing cost-efficient logistics solutions that also support decarbonization efforts,” says Jeremy Glick, Investment Partner and Head of Infra Growth at OIC. “With the two new terminals, CargoBeamer will play a key role in shifting traffic to rail.”
Investment Agreement for Modern Infrastructure
“We are pleased with the investment agreement with OIC, which has allowed us to achieve important milestones in making CargoBeamer the European champion for the urgently needed shift of freight transport from road to rail,” explains Nicolas Albrecht, CEO of CargoBeamer. “OIC has proven to be a visionary partner that shares our mission to create modern infrastructure for the decarbonization of European freight transport. Our terminals in Kaldenkirchen and Domodossola are strategically located along Europe’s most utilized intermodal corridor. Their capacity and the speed of our rail connections will be crucial in shifting large volumes of goods from road to rail.”
