Feb 1, 2025 at 10:18 PMTwenty years ago, the distance-based truck toll was introduced in Germany. Since then, it has established itself as an integral part of German transport financing and has presented an impressive track record.
(Köln) The truck toll has enabled the expansion and maintenance of infrastructure with a total of around 109 billion euros. Foreign trucks have made a significant contribution, accounting for about half of the revenue.
Incredible 640 Billion Kilometers
The past two decades have shown the enormous distances that toll-paying trucks cover in Germany: a total of 640 billion kilometers – equivalent to more than 2,000 trips from the Earth to the Sun and back. This figure makes it clear: freight transport is enormously important for our economy and our mobility. The toll helps to better manage traffic and protect the environment by making the use of roads by heavy commercial vehicles fairer. It is regularly adjusted by lawmakers to meet current requirements.
Christian Hoffmann, President of the Federal Office for Logistics and Mobility (BALM): “The truck toll is a successful model that not only contributes to the financing of our roads but also creates an incentive for environmentally friendly logistics solutions. In this way, BALM makes a significant contribution to a more sustainable and efficient transport system in Germany.”
Addressing the Challenges of Modern Freight Transport
The truck toll is a crucial instrument for addressing the challenges of modern freight transport. In the coming years, the revenues will continue to be used strategically to continuously expand infrastructure and make mobility in Germany future-proof.
