Dec 3, 2024 at 7:44 PMHapag-Lloyd has today opened its new office in Kampala, the capital of Uganda. Uganda is strategically located and offers excellent connections to its five neighboring countries in East and Central Africa. The country, with its 50 million inhabitants, has developed into an attractive market on the African continent. The Ugandan economy is on the rise, with a GDP growth of 5.9% expected for 2024.
(Hamburg/Kampala) As a landlocked country without direct access to the sea, the nation relies on neighboring ports such as Mombasa in Kenya and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania to facilitate its international trade. Approximately 22% of the total exports from the port of Mombasa—around 200,000 TEU—come from Uganda, highlighting the significant role of the country in the region’s trade flows. 95% of the transported cargo between Uganda and the ports is carried by truck.
In addition to exporting its own goods, Uganda’s significance also lies in its role as a trade center for the packaging and consolidation of a variety of goods transported throughout the region. Key export commodities transported through Uganda include timber and dry hides from South Sudan, cocoa, minerals, and timber from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, as well as coffee from Rwanda. These trade flows underscore Uganda’s growing influence on East African exports and its potential to facilitate cross-border trade.
Important Role in the African Export Landscape
“Uganda plays an important role in the African export landscape and continues to experience economic growth,” says Lars Sorensen, Senior Managing Director Region Middle East at Hapag-Lloyd. “The opening of our office in Kampala is part of our long-term strategy to be present early in emerging markets with high potential. With Kampala as a new hub, we can strengthen our position in the African market, improve service quality, and better meet the needs of customers in Uganda and neighboring regions.” The new Hapag-Lloyd office in Kampala will be led by Prashant Sindhwani and has five employees.
