Mercedes-Benz Truck Celebrates Series Start of the eActros 600
Nov 22, 2024 at 6:30 PMThe European consumer testing organization Euro NCAP has evaluated the safety of heavy trucks for the first time. The best-selling models from Volvo, the Volvo FH and the Volvo FM, both received the highest rating of five stars. The Volvo FM even achieved the best overall score among all tested trucks.
(Ismaning) The Volvo FM and the Volvo FH Aero achieved the highest rating of five stars in the first evaluation of truck safety by Euro NCAP. Both Volvo models were also awarded the City Safe Award. “This outstanding result makes me very proud, as it confirms Volvo Trucks’ leading position in safety,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks. He continues: “Safety is a core value for us and an essential part of our DNA. Safety has guided us since the founding of our company – and with every new product launch, we make our trucks even safer.”
The five-star rating from Euro NCAP means that Volvo Trucks has demonstrated excellent performance in criteria such as driver assistance and collision avoidance, thereby enhancing road safety for drivers and surrounding road users. Furthermore, both Volvo models meet the so-called City Safe criteria. This is achieved thanks to the good visibility and the excellent performance of Volvo’s actively supportive safety systems, which are designed to protect vulnerable road users in urban traffic.
“This is proof of our consistent efforts in developing safety measures that go beyond legal requirements to achieve our vision of zero accidents with our trucks,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director, Volvo Trucks. “The Euro NCAP ratings serve as a guide for our customers in their purchasing decisions and are an incentive for vehicle manufacturers to continuously work on improving safety,” adds Anna Wrige Berling.
Facts about Euro NCAP
The European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), based in Belgium, was established in 1996 and quickly became the European industry standard for assessing the safety of passenger cars. It is supported by several European governments, including the European Union.
In the truck test, a score was assigned for each safety system, which was then summarized for each area. Based on these scores, a star rating from one to five stars was calculated for the entire vehicle.
The structure of the truck test was as follows:
- Safe Driving: Monitoring of occupants, visibility (both direct and indirect), and vehicle assistance (e.g., speed assistance)
- Collision Avoidance: Frontal collisions (car, pedestrians, and cyclists), low-speed collisions, and collisions when leaving the lane
- Post-Crash: Rescue information
The goal of Euro NCAP is to gradually expand the scope of testing to include accident protection at a later stage and to test trucks in various transport segments.
