Volvo Trucks continuously improves its active safety systems to better protect vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians. The goal is to realize the company’s long-term vision and completely avoid accidents involving Volvo Trucks. The latest example is the Active Side Collision Avoidance Support System, commonly referred to as the turn assistant, with a particular emphasis on “active,” meaning actively supportive.
(Ismaning) This is an advancement of the side collision monitoring system, enhanced with an active braking function. Using radar sensors that detect approaching cyclists, the system can warn drivers and, if necessary, actively brake the truck to avoid a collision with cyclists when turning on the passenger side.
“Trucks are involved in 15 percent of fatal traffic accidents, and urban traffic can be a challenge even for the most experienced truck drivers,” says Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic & Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks. “At Volvo Trucks, we are constantly working to improve the safety of our trucks to protect both drivers and other road users. This safety system to protect cyclists in the city is one of our latest innovations that will bring us one step closer to our long-term vision of zero accidents with Volvo Trucks.” The Active Side Collision Avoidance Support System will be available for order starting November 2024 for the Volvo FH series as well as the Volvo FM and Volvo FMX models in all markets worldwide.
Next Generation Emergency Braking System
The second system is the next generation of collision warning with emergency braking from Volvo Trucks. This system was first introduced in 2012 and has been continuously improved since then. It uses both camera and radar sensors to monitor traffic in front of the truck. If a collision risk is detected, the system warns drivers and automatically brakes if necessary to avoid the collision or mitigate the consequences of a crash.
With the latest improvements, this system can now detect, warn, and brake for not only other vehicles but also pedestrians and cyclists. It has been certified to meet the new, stricter European legislation* for advanced emergency braking systems that will come into effect in 2028. Furthermore, Volvo Trucks’ system even exceeds the upcoming regulation in terms of the traffic situations it is designed for.
Not Waiting for Legislation
“We are pleased that the legal requirements align with our own vision of zero accidents,” says Anna Wrige Berling. “However, we at Volvo Trucks will not wait for legislation – we will continue to be innovative and exceed legal requirements with new features to support our own ambitious goals.” This automatic braking system will be standard equipment in Europe starting in 2025 for all trucks in the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX series and will be available worldwide as an option.
