Sep 19, 2024 at 7:17 PMThe internationally active Geis Group officially inaugurated its new freight terminal in Ebersdorf near Coburg today. With this state-of-the-art and sustainable transshipment facility, Geis Bischoff Logistics is significantly expanding its commitment in Upper Franconia. The Geis Group invested around 20 million euros in its first eco-terminal built with wood hybrid construction, green roof, and photovoltaic system. Almost 100 employees are working on site.
(Bad Neustadt/Ebersdorf) The freight terminal is located on a plot of approximately 44,000 square meters in the Ebersdorf West industrial area. Geis Bischoff Logistics moved into the new facility at the end of last year, with full operations starting in January. At today’s inauguration ceremony, the Geis Group welcomed around 200 guests, including Sebastian Straubel, the district administrator of Coburg, and Bernd Reisenweber, the mayor of Ebersdorf near Coburg, who addressed the guests with welcoming words.
Sebastian Straubel, district administrator of Coburg: “The new logistics center of the Geis Group underscores that the Coburg district is a strong location for efficient companies: centrally located in Germany and with good access to the regional transport infrastructure. Logistics companies that bring our food to supermarkets and commercial goods to businesses play a crucial role in our economy. Therefore, we are pleased that the Geis Group is investing here, making the Coburg economic region a little better, more sustainable, and future-proof.”

From Lichtenfels to Ebersdorf
With the new terminal in Ebersdorf, the Geis Group is expanding its capacities in the region. “We have grown significantly at our previous location in Lichtenfels – our facility there reached its limits, could not be expanded, and no longer met today’s requirements,” explains Jochen Geis, managing partner. “With the forward-looking possibilities of the new terminal in Ebersdorf, just eleven kilometers away, we are now well-equipped for further growth.”
In Ebersdorf, the experienced team of Geis Bischoff Logistics now has 6,000 square meters of transshipment area, a three-story office building with 1,300 square meters of space, as well as a truck wash and a gas station. With 77 loading and unloading docks, fast and efficient goods handling is enabled – perfectly complemented by the immediate proximity to the A73 motorway.
Prototype of a Sustainable Building Generation
The construction method of the new location is as forward-looking as its capacity. “A central goal of our sustainability strategy is to make the entire Geis Group climate-neutral by 2040,” emphasizes Hans-Wolfgang Geis, managing partner. “Ebersdorf, with its green roof, photovoltaic system, and wood hybrid construction, is a prime example of sustainable real estate and serves as a blueprint for our future buildings.”
The eco-terminal relies on wood as a building material – from massive, 42-meter-long roof trusses to the facade of the office building. The green roof not only improves thermal insulation but also contributes to a pleasant building climate. Large skylights make optimal use of daylight.
On the roof of the transshipment hall, a photovoltaic system generates around 500,000 kilowatt-hours of green electricity annually. This green energy powers electric vehicles or supplies the building technology and heat pump heating – in the future also via a large storage system. Additionally, the truck wash is operated with rainwater.
Networks and Customers Benefit
The new location also significantly strengthens the largest German groupage cooperation IDS. “We have firmly integrated Ebersdorf into the IDS network. Our team at the new location now serves previously peripheral areas of our IDS regions around Bad Neustadt, Nuremberg, and Naila,” explains Jochen Geis. “This leads to shorter distances and free capacities in our other regions – to the advantage of our customers: they benefit from optimized performance.”
Customer proximity in Upper Franconia is of great importance to the Geis Group, as Hans-Wolfgang Geis emphasizes: “In the last five years, we have managed to establish ourselves in the region. At the new location in Ebersdorf, we want to continue this growth and convince new customers with reliable services and flexible offerings.”
