Through various IT procedures, German customs enables secure and timely processing for businesses and individuals even with increasing shipment volumes. Frankfurt Airport is a hub for international freight traffic and the largest cargo airport in Europe, handling around 47 million shipments in 2023.
(Frankfurt/Berlin) Federal Minister of Finance Christian Lindner was able to get a firsthand look at the work of customs employees in freight processing today during the announcement of the customs annual report 2023 at the Frankfurt Airport customs office. Customs officers vividly demonstrated the tasks and activities involved in processing large freight shipments – from unloading an aircraft to risk-oriented goods inspections and the digitized processing in the IT system ATLAS.
In the past year, German customs collected around 158 billion euros in duties for the Federal Republic of Germany and the EU, thus contributing significantly to the functionality of the community. In addition to customs duties and import VAT amounting to 84.5 billion euros, customs also collected 62.4 billion euros in excise duties, 9.5 billion euros in vehicle tax, and 1.5 billion euros in air traffic tax.
Particularly through its digital risk analysis, customs ensures a smooth processing experience for customs participants. This creates fair competitive conditions for the economy while simultaneously protecting consumers from prohibited goods, such as counterfeit products or narcotics.
95,600 Investigations for Customs Offenses
Last year, customs officers seized around 55 tons of narcotics, 52,000 illegal weapons, and 3.3 million counterfeit items nationwide. Additionally, they confiscated a total of 129 million smuggled cigarettes. In 2023, customs initiated around 95,600 investigations against nearly 98,900 suspects due to customs offenses.
