Apr 12, 2024 at 3:48 PMThe Austrian Post AG today officially opened its new parcel logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf. In a 22,000 m² hall, 260 employees work in two shifts to sort and direct over 250,000 parcels per day to their destinations. The investment volume was around 70 million euros. The celebrations took place in the presence of Vienna’s Mayor Michael Ludwig and the entire board of the Austrian Post AG. The spiritual blessing was performed by Vienna’s cathedral priest Toni Faber.
(Wien-Inzersdorf) “The opening of the new parcel logistics center in Vienna-Inzersdorf underscores the strength of the Vienna economic location and its role as an important hub for trade and logistics. This center will not only lead to increased efficiency in postal services but will also create new jobs, thus making a significant contribution to value creation in Vienna. This logistics center is proof of the Austrian Post’s confidence in the economic location of Vienna and a sign that we are working together to continue strengthening Vienna’s economic engine,” said Michael Ludwig, Mayor and Governor of Vienna.
“With the new parcel logistics center in Vienna, we are completing the expansion program of recent years. We have invested a total of around 500 million euros to stay one step ahead of parcel growth. We have succeeded in creating not only a powerful but also a sustainable logistics center. This is evidenced by a comprehensive green space concept, a green roof, and a photovoltaic system with a capacity of two megawatts peak,” says Georg Pölzl, General Director, Austrian Post AG.
“Modern logistics in 2024 has a lot to do with technology. We process thousands of tracking events daily at this location and determine volumes fully automatically. This requires not only personnel but also IT power. Therefore, we are placing an increasingly strong focus on technology, as this innovative logistics center demonstrates,” explains Walter Oblin, Deputy General Director, Board for Mail & Finance, Austrian Post AG.
“Our new parcel logistics center is one of the most innovative and powerful locations in Europe! We can now process up to 25,500 parcels per hour through a hybrid model of three sorting machines. Auto unloaders and roll container tippers assist our employees and accelerate the processes. With this location, we are setting new standards for the entire industry,” says Peter Umundum, Board Director for Parcel & Logistics, Austrian Post AG.
Sorting capacity of 25,500 parcels per hour
The groundbreaking for the site took place in March 2022, and it has now been ceremonially opened. The new parcel logistics center has a sorting capacity of up to 25,500 parcels per hour or 250,000 parcels per day in its first expansion phase, which corresponds to more than a doubling of the previous sorting capacity at the Vienna-Inzersdorf location. For the first time, an innovative hybrid model is being used, where three different sorting machines operate depending on the parcel size: a cross-belt sorter processes up to 15,000 parcels per hour, while another approximately 9,000 parcels per hour are sorted by a dedicated small parcel sorter that sorts smaller parcels with a maximum weight of five kilograms. An additional specialization is achieved through a bulky goods sorter that processes up to 1,500 particularly large and bulky parcels per hour.
Employees receive support from two modern auto unloaders: intelligent, automatic parcel unloading systems that take over the unloading of swap bodies (WAB). Up to 6,000 parcels can be unloaded fully automatically per hour. Four roll container tippers also enable the efficient unloading of roll containers and pallets.
For the open and roof areas of the parcel logistics center, landscape architects and gardeners have developed an ecologically sustainable green space concept, including green roofs and photovoltaic modules. A photovoltaic system with a capacity of two megawatts peak has been installed on the roof of the new building, and together with the existing photovoltaic system of the mail logistics center, a total capacity of 2.8 megawatts peak is achieved. The building is heated with an air-water heat pump.
The green areas on the site have been designed with native or site-appropriate shrubs, perennials, and a wildflower sowing that impresses in spring with its floral splendor and in summer with its lush green, providing a natural habitat for species such as wild bees and bats.
The total area covers 200,000 square meters
The total area in Vienna-Inzersdorf covers 200,000 m², making it the largest location of the Post in Austria. A total of 1,500 people are employed on the site, which now includes a parcel logistics center, a mail logistics center, the international center, the truck fleet of transport logistics East, and the printing and mailing center of Post Business Solutions. The hall of the former parcel logistics center is currently being optimized for continued operation as a delivery base, and the Vienna location of Medien.Zustell GmbH will also move from Simmering to Inzersdorf.
