Switzerland Aims to Promote Rail Freight Transport and Inland Shipping
Jan 13, 2024 at 8:35 PMIn a challenging economic environment, the Lübeck Port Authority (LHG) managed to hold its ground last year: According to preliminary estimates, the company handled 4.8 percent less cargo at its terminals than in 2022. The volumes fell from 22.4 million to 21.3 million tons.
(Lübeck) In the RoRo sector, the number of loading units decreased by around five percent to 890,000 due to reduced production from a major supplier. Similar reasons led to a decline in forest product volumes in the packaging and paper sector by 13.8 percent to around 874,000 tons. On the positive side, the number of new vehicles (+2.4) and accompanied truck transports (+1.3 percent) increased. The number of passengers also rose by 2.5 percent to 500,000.
Despite difficult market conditions, shipping companies maintained their liner services in full. “We greatly appreciate that,” comments LHG Managing Director Sebastian Jürgens. “We want to continue supporting our shipping companies in market development. In addition to further expanding our berths, our largest project number 5 has already been completed, we are primarily focusing on stimulating market access: On July 11, we will hold the second German-Latvian Port Day in Riga. We will be presenting with a strong Lübeck delegation there.” As usual, the German-Finnish Port Day will follow in Lübeck on November 27.
Personal Visit from Latvian President Egils Levits
The Lübeck Port Days are gaining more and more recognition. For the premiere of the German-Latvian Port Day last April, Latvian President Egils Levits personally traveled to the Hanseatic city. In his appearance, he honored both the close connection between the two economies and the intensive, long-standing partnership between Lübeck and the Latvian ports. All speakers emphasized the close ties between the German and Latvian economies, particularly the long-standing partnership between Lübeck and the Latvian ports. The German-Finnish Port Day has become a staple in the annual calendar of logistics events. Recently, Seppo Parvi, Deputy CEO of the global corporation Stora Enso, a prominent figure in the international forest products industry, appeared there.
