Jan 11, 2024 at 7:50 PMBGL is very satisfied with the current progress of the action week and demands an end to the disproportionate and haphazard burden of additional levies. The Federal Association of Goods Transport (BGL) draws a positive interim balance at the midpoint of the action week, which it has been conducting together with the Farmers’ Association since January 8.
(Frankfurt) “Together with the farmers, we have been able to make it clear that this location and economic policy of the traffic light coalition cannot continue like this,” stated Board Spokesman Prof. Dr. Dirk Engelhardt. “The disproportionate and haphazard burden of additional levies imposed by this federal government jeopardizes the existence of businesses and jobs in both the transport sector and agriculture.”
Several thousand trucks participated in protest marches across Germany in recent days. The actions were largely peaceful. “I am glad and proud that we have succeeded in drawing attention to the enormous discontent in the middle class through democratic means, without allowing ourselves to be co-opted by radical nationalists,” Engelhardt stated. “The Farmers’ Association and the BGL stand for a clear but peaceful protest.”
Further demonstrations by medium-sized transport companies are also planned for the coming days:
Large rallies are scheduled for Thursday in Cottbus, Dresden, Düsseldorf, and Kassel. In Cottbus, a protest letter will be handed over to the Federal Chancellor during a demonstration on the sidelines of the festive event for the opening of an ICE workshop.
The focus on Friday will be on Bavaria. A large truck protest action is planned at Theresienwiese in Munich.
The highlight of the action week is expected to be a large rally on Monday, January 15, at 11:00 AM in Berlin, where Engelhardt will also speak. The BGL expects hundreds of trucks to participate in the event. Whether and to what extent the protest actions will continue afterwards depends on the political reactions.
The demands of the BGL are:
- Compliance with the coalition promise to avoid double CO2 pricing for tolls plus diesel
- Doubling the toll harmonization programs to 900 million euros
- More state investments in intact roads and bridges
- More state investments in the expansion of truck parking spaces
- Reliable and adequately funded support programs for the transition to climate-friendly transport
