SMART CITY LOGISTICS CONGRESS Jena on July 18/19, 2023
Jul 4, 2023 at 4:10 PMThe piece goods cooperation Online Systemlogistics (OSL) has introduced a new product: Online Green Cargo. For each transported Green Cargo shipment, 50 cents go to a climate project for CO2 reduction. Additionally, the delivery time of a maximum of 72 hours is designed to ensure high utilization and stop density, making it environmentally friendly.
(Paderborn) Just six months after the start of the pilot phase in early 2023, the share of Green Cargo shipments in the total shipment volume was about 12 percent, with 83 of the currently 96 OSL partners already booking the product. “Environmental protection and the reduction of CO2 emissions are important to us. At the same time, we want to give our partners and their customers the choice of whether and when to book the climate-friendly product,” explains OSL Managing Director Petra Welling. “With the Green Cargo option, they can determine for themselves which shipments can be delivered within 72 hours. Thanks to this large time window, shipments can be bundled even more efficiently, leading to higher utilization and lower CO2 emissions.”
The longer delivery time benefits both ecology and economy. To meet deadlines for urgent shipments, more vehicles must be on the road. However, many shipments are not time-critical. This “play mass” allows for flexible and particularly economical scheduling, which, according to Petra Welling, certainly has a future: “How many shipments really need to be at the recipient the next day? For companies and consumers, ‘same day’ or ‘next day’ deliveries are the standard. A change in mindset here would be a significant step towards sustainable logistics.”
50 Cents per Shipment to a Climate Protection Project
OSL goes even further: 50 cents from each Green Cargo shipment flow into a climate protection project. To finance this, the environmental product with a 72-hour delivery time is priced the same as the OSL standard product “Speed Cargo” with 24-48 hours. At the end of the year, the partners decide whether to support a regional environmental project with their contribution or to donate the money to the initiative selected by OSL; voting is currently still ongoing in the relevant committees.
As the first piece goods cooperation, Online Systemlogistics was certified by DEKRA in 2014 according to the EN 16258 standard; the standard serves for the uniform calculation of energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for a standardized CO2 balance. During the annual recertifications, OSL’s quality management checks whether the partners’ values are within the tolerance range. Deviations are analyzed in detail and countermeasures are taken if necessary.
Partner Audits Consider Environmental Balances
For the partner audits, OSL also takes environmental balances into account; since 2002, OSL has been continuously certified according to the environmental management system standard ISO 14001. “We take the processes defined in ISO 14001 for achieving environmental goals very seriously,” says OSL Quality and Environmental Management Officer Marcella Rennecke. “With the new Green Cargo product, we are now creating a measurable indicator for climate protection and CO2 reduction.”
New Office and Social Building Inaugurated
The new office and social building has turned out just as Online Systemlogistics wished for its employees – 800 square meters of comfort! Here, attractive changing rooms, modern sanitary facilities including showers for ladies and gentlemen, a break room with beverage and snack vending machines, a conference room, and offices for administration can be found. With its beautiful, sustainable wooden construction, the building is a real eye-catcher. It was ready for occupancy in autumn 2022 and has been actively used since then. Now it’s summer and celebration time: Last Friday, the inauguration was celebrated with our system partners, colleagues, and everyone involved in the construction.
