Swiss Post Digitizes Village Shops in the Mountains
Jun 11, 2023 at 3:08 PMThe Federal Council decided at its meeting on June 9, 2023, to introduce the second version of the intelligent tachograph. The decision also includes further adjustments of Swiss regulations to international law. The regulations will come into effect on July 15, 2023.
(Bern) The second version of the intelligent tachograph, also referred to as GEN2 V2, will be introduced in parallel with the EU. New vehicles must be equipped with this tachograph at their first registration starting from August 21, 2023.
In cross-border traffic, vehicles with older versions are subject to a staggered retrofitting obligation. From January 1, 2025, analog and older digital tachographs will no longer be permitted, and by August 18, 2025, the intelligent tachographs of the first version (GEN2 V1) must also be replaced.
For vehicles in domestic traffic, there is generally no retrofitting obligation. However, if the Swiss option is utilized to register a vehicle with a GEN2 V1 tachograph from August 21, 2023, until May 31, 2024, it must be replaced by the first inspection after 24 months at the latest.
The new devices recognize in which country they are located and record border crossings. They are connected to the global satellite network Galileo and can verify the authenticity of satellite signals. Like the current tachographs GEN2 V1, the new devices support remote data queries for the police. The data may only be used for pre-selection during traffic checks and now also includes indications of possible driving time violations.
The GEN2 V2 system also includes new tachograph cards with more storage space. The cards will continue to be issued by ASTRA and will be distributed before August 21, 2023.
Phasing out regulations for child seats
Further adjustments concern the incorporation of international construction and equipment regulations for vehicles and components. New child seats tested according to UNECE Regulation No. 44 may no longer be sold or otherwise made available for use from September 1, 2024. This regulation has also been adopted by the EU. The seats are identifiable by the orange label with the inscription “ECE R44…” and the round test mark with a large “E” inside. The use of existing child seats remains permitted.
