Geis: Kick-off for Photovoltaic Power Plant
Mar 23, 2023 at 7:45 PMDeutsche Post DHL has officially opened the new parcel center in Aschheim, further expanding its capacities in the nationwide DHL parcel network. Today, the Prime Minister of the Free State of Bavaria, Dr. Markus Söder, and Nikola Hagleitner, Member of the Board of Deutsche Post DHL Group for Post & Parcel Germany, together with the Second Mayor of the municipality of Aschheim, Robert Ertl, gave the official start signal for the largest parcel location in Germany.
(Munich) The new parcel center is connected to the existing Aschheim DHL parcel center via a tunnel for arrivals and departures. With a sorting capacity of up to 72,000 shipments per hour, Aschheim, with its two parcel centers, is now among the largest parcel locations nationwide and one of the most powerful in Europe. Deutsche Post DHL has invested a low three-digit million amount in the new parcel center.
Nikola Hagleitner: “With the new parcel center, we have urgently needed additional sorting capacities in a still-growing parcel market to serve the people in the greater Munich area as well as in large parts of Upper Bavaria. We are making an important contribution to climate protection with innovative sorting technology and an ecologically sustainable construction concept. In addition, our company is creating around 500 new tariff-bound and socially insured jobs for the region.” Currently, around 600 employees are working at the parcel location in Aschheim.
Robert Ertl: “This state-of-the-art facility will provide citizens and Deutsche Post DHL with an efficient and secure service. It will also boost our economy and create employment opportunities.”

Unique and Green Construction Project
In line with the sustainability strategy of Deutsche Post DHL Group, the parcel center was built according to the latest construction standards and in a particularly sustainable manner. A photovoltaic system on the roof contributes to the parcel center being partially self-sufficient with green electricity. The heating supply of the parcel center is provided by climate-friendly district heating, which is supplied by a regional energy provider. The energy supply company primarily produces the heat energy from geothermal sources. Additionally, the parcel center features a green roof, which also serves as thermal insulation, saving energy in winter and acting as a heat shield in summer. Furthermore, the greenery has sound-absorbing properties. In addition, Deutsche Post DHL is deploying its first gas trucks for climate-neutral transport at the Freising branch, which includes the parcel location in Aschheim.
The new building is situated on a 67,000 square meter area with good access to the road and rail network. The current sorting capacity of the new parcel center is 20,000 packages per hour. With the completion of the new sorting facility in the second quarter, it will achieve a sorting capacity of up to 40,000 packages per hour. The connection to the existing parcel center, which can sort up to 32,000 shipments per hour, is via a tunnel under Klausnerstraße with a shared entrance and parking area. Such a combination of two parcel centers is unique in Germany so far. The three largest DHL parcel centers are currently located in Obertshausen near Frankfurt, Bochum, and Ludwigsfelde. Each can sort around 50,000 shipments per hour. Overall, Deutsche Post DHL Group currently operates 38 parcel centers in Germany.
