LIP Invest Releases Market Report for the Fourth Quarter of 2022
Mar 9, 2023 at 1:15 PMThe new location of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions in Wesel will set new standards in energy and environmental protection starting this year. This is also ensured by the collaboration with Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband (EGLV). Together, the expert in water management, climate adaptation, and sustainability, along with the globally active specialist in warehousing logistics, will implement measures related to flora, fauna, and biodiversity.
(Wesel) At the Rhein-Lippe port, directly in the Lippeaue nature reserve, lies the new flagship project of Rhenus Warehousing Solutions. In line with its “green” location, the 86,000 square meter multi-user site impresses from both a logistical and sustainable perspective. The facility is planned to operate CO2-negative after completion and handover: A photovoltaic system with a peak output of 9 megawatts, one of the largest contiguous in Europe, is planned. Extensive battery storage systems will also allow the site to operate independently at night. A geothermal system, powered by the electricity from the photovoltaic system, will climate-control the halls using geothermal energy. Additionally, part of the facade will be clad with wood and partially greened to bind carbon dioxide. The CO2 footprint of the site will be measured using software that also suggests measures for continuous optimization, such as alternative materials for customer projects. Electric charging stations for cars and bicycles, XXL insect hotels, and birdhouses for native bird species round off the sustainable features of the branch.
The sustainability on site is another example that Rhenus exclusively builds new warehouse locations that meet or exceed the “BREEAM Excellent” standard. “With the Wesel location, we are setting a new standard in terms of sustainability,” says Dominik Schmidt, Sustainability & Energy Manager at Rhenus Warehousing Solutions. “That makes EGLV, as an experienced partner, all the more important to us. We can only benefit from their know-how and contacts in the future.” Rhenus Warehousing Solutions has EGLV review all sustainability and climate adaptation measures. Local planning for nature-friendly rainwater management and facade greening will also be developed together. Friedhelm Pothoff, head of the Public Relations Department at EGLV, says: “Climate protection and climate adaptation can only succeed together and when everyone takes part of the responsibility. Therefore, we are pleased to support Rhenus Warehousing Solutions, an engaged partner that is creating an economically viable and sustainable logistics location.” In the coming weeks, an on-site workshop with all parties involved is planned to identify further climate adaptation measures related to the technical infrastructure and local biodiversity. For the future, it is intended to jointly accompany logistics projects for a greener region, for example, in Bönen, located near the Lippe and Emscher rivers.
