Lode Freight Forwarding in Waldkraiburg is now Gebrüder Weiss
Nov 2, 2022 at 5:59 PMDHL Global Forwarding, the air and sea freight specialist of Deutsche Post DHL Group, and GoodShipping are expanding their long-standing partnership. GoodShipping is a global pioneer and market leader in carbon insetting with the aim of decarbonizing container shipping through a changed mix of shipping fuels. With the recent order of approximately 60 million liters of sustainable shipping fuels, DHL will save a total of 180,000 tons of TtW-CO2e emissions by 2024 for both FCL and LCL transports.
(Bonn/Amsterdam) This corresponds roughly to the amount of conventional shipping fuel consumed by ten container ships on their journey from Asia to Europe. The cooperation between DHL Global Forwarding and GoodShipping has been in place for five years. Both aim to make sea freight more environmentally friendly through insetting.
“In 2017, we were the first logistics company to collaborate with GoodShipping. An important lever for reducing our CO2 emissions is the use of sustainable fuels, and GoodShipping’s insetting service perfectly complements us in this regard. They have established a careful and controlled process, meet our high sustainability standards, and share our goal of emission-free logistics. We are very happy that we can now continue and expand this cooperation,” said Tim Scharwath, CEO of DHL Global Forwarding.
Pioneering Role in the Freight Industry
As a demonstration of their joint commitment to the industry, DHL Global Forwarding and GoodShipping also want to pilot a new insetting accounting concept from the non-profit organization Smart Freight Centre. According to this concept, emissions reductions through sustainable fuels are assigned to specific customers by decoupling the accounting of the environmental properties of the fuels from their physical flow. This allows customers to contribute to and report emissions reductions in their supply chain, even if the reduction is not physically linked to their specific transport activity. This new framework is intended to be transformed into a general industry standard.
“With this commitment, DHL Global Forwarding is truly taking a pioneering role in the freight industry,” said Dirk Kronemeijer, CEO of GoodShipping. “With its goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2050, DHL is our perfect partner for a strategic and mutually beneficial long-term collaboration. We have great respect for the leadership role that the company demonstrates with this significant commitment. It will deepen our cooperation even further.”
With DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, the path is paved for a transition to clean and sustainable transport. Under GoGreen Plus, customers from all business areas of Deutsche Post DHL Group can utilize various options to minimize logistics-related emissions and other environmental impacts along the entire supply chain – for example, the use of sustainable fuels. Based on internationally agreed standards, it is calculated how much fossil fuel the shipper would have used without the insetting service. The corresponding amount is then replaced by sustainable biofuels derived solely from waste and residues.
Passing Reduced Greenhouse Gas Emissions to Customers
With the “Book & Claim” mechanism, DHL can pass on the benefits of reduced greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 3 emissions) to its customers, thus supporting them in achieving their own climate goals. The GoGreen Plus product offering is part of the company’s medium-term sustainability roadmap aimed at 2030 and supports the sub-goal of covering at least 30 percent of fuel needs with sustainable fuels. To reduce greenhouse gas emissions in line with the Paris Climate Agreement, the group will invest 7 billion euros in sustainable fuels and technologies by 2030.
