Nov 1, 2022 at 6:35 PMDeutsche Post DHL Group has officially launched package transport via tram in the state capital of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern today. From now on, around 450 DHL package shipments will be transported daily on the new special line in the city area. The additional trip starts at 11:17 AM from the Haselholz depot and stops at the Kieler Straße, Platz der Freiheit, and Hegelstraße stops. Passengers are not on board.
(Bonn/Schwerin) At the stops, the shipments will be distributed to parcel stations. This smart concept saves emissions and reduces traffic in the city center. The delivery of the shipments at the depot is CO2-neutral via an eco-friendly StreetScooter powered by green electricity.
The initiative is a joint project with the state capital Schwerin and local public transport Schwerin (NVS). It is part of the project “Future Delivery Traffic for the State Capital Schwerin,” which aims to implement environmentally friendly concepts for Schwerin’s delivery traffic by 2035.
Sustainable and Innovative Logistics
Wilfried Schumann, branch manager of Deutsche Post for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: “A wonderful project. The package tram in Schwerin makes tangible what we work hard for and believe in: a maximally green, sustainable, and innovative logistics and public service for the people of the region. I am pleased that, together with our strong partners, we have succeeded in launching this nationwide pilot project in Schwerin.”
Schwerin’s mayor Rico Badenschier emphasizes: “Schwerin is facing the challenge of sustainably shaping delivery traffic. The package tram supports our efforts towards a shift to public transport. With this unique project nationwide, we are gaining experiences that could be of great importance for many other municipalities.”
Package Tram is Just the Beginning
For environmental officer Bernd Nottebaum, the package tram is just the beginning. “During the development of the guiding concept, many more innovative proposals from companies, logistics providers, and citizens of the state capital were collected in several workshops. In the next two years, they can be examined in the second project phase and tested with federal funding.”
Wilfried Eisenberg, managing director of NVS, said during the festive commissioning: “The tram is the zipper of Schwerin and connects this city sustainably, bringing it together reliably and electrically for 114 years. And it can do more than just transport people. With a good connection of active individuals and ideas, packages and parcels also have a secure place on the tram. Connecting a stop with a package acceptance or drop-off fits into our concept of being a modern and sustainable mobility service provider.”
Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Aims to be Climate-Neutral by 2040
Reinhard Meyer, Minister for Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Tourism, and Labor in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, also welcomes the commitment of those involved in this project: “Climate protection is one of the most important future tasks. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern aims to be climate-neutral by 2040 at the latest. Every single step counts on this path to achieve the goal. The package transport with the package tram in Schwerin helps to save emissions. At the same time, it reduces delivery traffic in the city center. This further enhances the state capital as a place to live and work.”
The Schwerin package tram seamlessly integrates into Deutsche Post DHL’s green sustainability strategy. The company is already the most climate-friendly postal and parcel service provider in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: with an e-delivery fleet of nearly 500 electric vehicles and electric cargo bikes, especially e-trikes and e-bikes. Thus, letter and package shipments are already delivered CO2-neutral in about one-third of the delivery districts.
Further Investments in Green Logistics
No other logistics provider invests as much in sustainability in Germany as Deutsche Post DHL Group. This year alone, it is around 600 million euros in electric mobility and the construction or renovation of climate-friendly facilities, such as CO2-free delivery hubs. To become greener in the transport of shipments between package and letter centers, the Post & Paket Deutschland division will also acquire over 400 (bio-)gas-powered trucks in the next two years. With new “GoGreen Plus” products, the company offers customers the opportunity to actively manage and reduce their CO2 emissions generated during transport and to specifically choose climate-friendly transport by rail.
