Oct 26, 2022 at 3:39 PMDB Schenker is advancing the green transformation in land transport and is consistently focusing on sustainable innovations. This week, the logistics service provider signed a cooperation agreement with Trailer Dynamics and the Krone commercial vehicle group for the use of eTrailers in European land transport.
(Frankfurt/Aachen) “The cooperation represents another step towards the electrification of land transport. It is essential for us to seek new sustainable solutions that can be integrated into our daily operations. With the eTrailer from Trailer Dynamics, we gain another promising model,” says Cyrille Bonjean, Executive Vice President Land Transport at DB Schenker in Europe.
Wolfgang Janda, Executive Vice President, Head of Network & Linehaul Management at DB Schenker: “The use of eTrailers enables an early transition to a gradual shift towards a completely CO2-free fleet and, in our view, is not a transitional technology but will become a permanent part of our commercial vehicle fleet in the long term. This is another step in our effort to reduce our ecological footprint and achieve net-zero by 2040.”
Next Important Step
Michael Nimtsch, Managing Director at Trailer Dynamics, says: “The vision of Trailer Dynamics is to make a significant contribution to the decarbonization of the economy and to sustainable, environmentally friendly logistics for long-haul trucks with the eTrailer. Together with our cooperation partner DB Schenker, we are taking the next important step towards realizing this vision.”
“Electrification, digitalization, automation, and decarbonization are the strategic goals that Krone will achieve with its innovative products, particularly the eTrailer. We are therefore very pleased that we not only share these goals with our long-standing customer DB Schenker but are also bringing this eTrailer project to reality together,” adds Dr. Stefan Binnewies, Board Member of Krone Holding.
The eTrailer relieves the tractor unit and saves fuel
The electrified trailers from Trailer Dynamics feature an electric drive system that supports the drive of the tractor unit. A specially developed component uses patented sensors to determine the driving dynamics of the combination and adjusts the eTrailer accordingly, ensuring that the eTrailer supports the tractor unit without ever allowing it to be oversteered. The electric drive system also enables energy recovery during braking.
The drive control of the eTrailer operates independently, so no interface to the tractor unit is necessary. Furthermore, the trailers can be combined and used with tractor units from all manufacturers. The eTrailers support diesel, gas, electric, and hydrogen-powered tractor units.
2,000 trailers to be rolled out from 2024
The trailers can be equipped with batteries of 300kWh, 450kWh, or 600kWh, depending on the needs. This can extend the range of electric tractor units by up to 500 km, or significantly reduce the consumption of conventional diesel tractor units. The CO2 emissions can thus be reduced by 20 – 40%. The logistics service provider will gradually roll out these 2,000 eTrailers in its European network starting in 2024.
