IKEA City Project Wins Austrian Logistics Award 2022

At yesterday’s evening gala for the Austrian Logistics Day at the Design Center Linz, there was an exciting finale for the Logistics Award 2022. 400 guests applauded the projects of Kühne+Nagel, ZKW Lichtsysteme, and IKEA, before VNL Advisory Board spokesperson Hubert Zajicek announced the IKEA Wien Westbahnhof project as the winner.

(Linz) The Austrian Logistics Day started with the Logistics Future Lab, which began with a strong focus on the energy market. About 700 supply chain and logistics managers gathered for the Austrian Logistics Day.

The new city store concept IKEA Wien Westbahnhof aims to align with the trend of urbanization and reach new customer groups. The furniture store is designed to be car-free. Approximately 3,300 cash & carry items are available for in-store shopping. For larger products, there are various delivery and pickup options.

Limited Space Requires High-Density Storage

Limited space necessitates high-density storage. The automated deep-lane storage system allows for nine loading units to be stored in the same shelf compartment in a row. Overnight, the goods are redistributed to the sales floor using software support for optimal replenishment. A 100% traceability of the goods is ensured.

In distribution, an “order orchestration system” plays a crucial role in optimizing the flow of goods and meeting the customer’s desired delivery time: 80% of customers purchase smaller carry-out products that do not require further service.

20 Percent of Customers Require a Service

However, for 20% of customers – who account for nearly 70% of revenue – a service is required…

Excellent Logistics Makes New Sales Models Possible

Three distribution centers carry the entire range and are involved in the logistics network. Logistics is the enabler for the practical implementation of a completely new sales model. “It once again shows that excellent logistics makes new sales models possible,” the jury agreed on the enabler logistics.
