HHLA and Fraunhofer Aim to Automate Hinterland Processes
Sep 30, 2022 at 5:56 AMThe robotics manufacturer Magazino is expanding its robot fleet at additional Zalando logistics locations to a total of 57 TORU robots. For Magazino, this is the largest single order in the company’s history and simultaneously underscores the importance of TORU as a fundamental building block of automated processes in modern e-commerce logistics.
(Munich) The mobile, intelligent pick robots from Magazino will soon be deployed in the Zalando logistics centers in Lahr, Erfurt, and Verona (Italy). They assist in the outsourcing of online-ordered shoes and their preparation for sorting and packaging.
Magazino last received a large order from Zalando for the location in Lahr in the fall of 2021. Following the successful qualification test, the rollout of an additional 29 robots in the Zalando logistics centers in Erfurt and Verona (Italy) is now underway. All robots are scheduled to be delivered by the end of September 2022, with final commissioning planned for the first quarter of 2023.
Expansion Means Relief for Employees
Marcus Daute, Director Logistics Product & Strategy at Zalando SE, says: “Magazino has already proven with its mobile pick robots in Lahr that they support our logistics processes very well. They are in operation six days a week in a three-shift system, covering the basic load for shoe box picking. The current expansion of the robot fleet not only means relief for our colleagues, but we also ensure that we continue to provide our customers with the best possible service.”
Frederik Brantner, CEO and founder of Magazino, says: “In less than a year, Zalando has now decided to scale further after Lahr. For Magazino, this step represents the largest single order in our still relatively young company history. We are proud of this and look forward to supporting Zalando’s further development with our advanced robotics solutions in close cooperation.”
Accelerated Throughput Times
Zalando started its first project with two TORU robots from Magazino back in 2018. With the expansion to now a total of 57 autonomous “colleagues,” the logistics of the online platform will soon have the largest fleet of TORU robots in operation to date. Zalando benefits from accelerated throughput times, a constant 24/7 flow of goods, and error minimization, even during high order volumes. At the same time, the fashion and lifestyle specialist, whose DNA also includes logistics, is highly flexible. The robots can be redistributed between locations as needed in the future.
