RheinCargo: Port Crane in Neuss is Being Dismantled and Recycled
Sep 25, 2022 at 7:55 PMAfter one and a half years of construction, the official opening of the new logistics center Tyrol in Vomp took place today, Friday. Among the honored guests at the celebrations were Josef Geisler, Deputy Governor of Tyrol, Karl-Josef Schubert, Mayor of the municipality of Vomp, Ernst Derfeser, investor and managing director of the eponymous company, as well as DI Peter Umundum, Executive Director for Parcel & Logistics, and DI Dr. Georg Pölzl, General Director, both from Austrian Post AG. The blessing was performed by Regens Mag. Roland Buemberger, General Vicar of the Diocese of Innsbruck.
(Vomp, AT) Following the relocation of parcel sorting and the delivery base, the letter sorting, transport logistics West, a branch for major customers, and office space for overhead have now been completely moved from the old location in Hall in Tyrol to Vomp.
“The new construction of the logistics center in Vomp is a clear commitment by Austrian Post to the location in Tyrol. Sustainability is not just a buzzword here, but is also visible externally, for example, in the PV system or in the design of green spaces. With the clear goal of emission-free delivery, the Post also supports Tyrol’s path to energy autonomy,” says ÖR Josef Geisler, Deputy Governor of Tyrol.
“With the new logistics center in Vomp, we are well prepared for the challenges of the future. The people of Tyrol benefit from this sustainable location, which not only handles the resource soil carefully but also generates electricity for the sorting machines and the yellow-green e-fleet of the Post through its own photovoltaic system,” says DI Dr. Georg Pölzl, General Director, Austrian Post AG.
“The establishment and operation of the new logistics center in Vomp has been and is a project of superlatives for our municipality. On one hand, it is the company with the largest building volume and operational area, and on the other hand, it currently offers the most significant job opportunities in Vomp. As a service and supply company, the new logistics center Tyrol of Austrian Post AG thus has a special significance for both Vomp and our entire region. It is also particularly noteworthy that it has been possible to take into account the interests of nature and climate protection on the edge of the Karwendel Nature Park,” says Karl-Josef Schubert, Mayor of the municipality of Vomp.
“In recent years, we have seen the potential of e-commerce. In 2021, we processed 184 million packages, as well as 615 million letters and 3.9 billion advertising and media shipments. For these quantities, we need powerful sorting systems and motivated employees, like those we have here in Vomp. Through the new construction, we contribute to ensuring that a part of the value creation remains here in Tyrol,” explains DI Peter Umundum, Executive Director for Parcel & Logistics, Austrian Post AG.
“I am very pleased that we, as investors, were able to develop the new logistics center Tyrol in Vomp for Austrian Post AG. Through the good cooperation with the planners, the authorities, and the general contractor Goldbeck Rhomberg, this project was implemented in a record time of just 10 months. During construction, special attention was paid to ensuring that the neighbors are not exposed to additional noise emissions and that the logistics center is operated sustainably and environmentally friendly. My thanks go to the responsible employees of the Post, as well as to the executing companies and my employees for the excellent cooperation,” says Ernst Derfeser, investor and managing director, Ernst Derfeser GmbH.
Powerful and Sustainable
The new building in Vomp now enables a sorting capacity of up to 10,000 packages per hour, which corresponds to almost a tripling of the capacity of the old location in Hall in Tyrol. Over 150,000 packages and 1.2 million letters can now be sorted daily in Vomp. The new logistics center Tyrol has secured over 400 jobs, with more than 100 new jobs created.
Sustainability was at the forefront of the project’s implementation: The approximately 100,000 m² site was previously a soil excavation depot. To avoid further soil sealing, the Post, together with the project’s investor, Ernst Derfeser GmbH, has rehabilitated the site. Only a quarter of the total area has been built on.
The green spaces around the logistics center were designed with a focus on biodiversity and are managed in an environmentally friendly manner. Even today, they provide a habitat for native plants and animals, including beneficial insects, wild bees, and ducks that have found a new home in a biotope on the Post premises.
The flat roof of the logistics center is completely greened and features a photovoltaic system with a capacity of 500 kilowatts peak (kWp), which is continuously being expanded. The green electricity generated is used, among other things, for sorting machines and the e-vehicles of the delivery base.
To protect neighbors, the logistics center was designed to serve as a “buffer” against light and noise emissions from the surrounding properties.
The investor and builder of the new location is Ernst Derfeser GmbH. The Post has invested around 21 million euros as a tenant. An interest search for the repurposing of the old logistics center in Hall in Tyrol has been initiated.
