The Program for the Supply Chain Innovation Day is Complete
Aug 3, 2022 at 6:06 PMHyundai Motor has announced the export of the XCIENT Fuel Cell series of fuel cell trucks to Germany. Germany is the largest commercial vehicle market in Europe. The German market is the gateway for expansion into other European markets. Seven German companies are deploying 27 innovative XCIENT Fuel Cells. The fuel cell truck has already covered over four million kilometers in Switzerland.
(Offenbach) Seven German companies from the logistics, manufacturing, and trade sectors will incorporate 27 XCIENT fuel cell trucks into their fleets. The Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport (BMDV) is promoting the use of these environmentally friendly heavy commercial vehicles.
“We are pleased to introduce the Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell to the German market. Hyundai, a recognized market leader in hydrogen fuel cell technology, is seizing this opportunity to expand its business in the European market. Additionally, with the XCIENT Fuel Cell, we support Germany’s efforts to achieve its climate-neutral goals,” says Mark Freymueller, Senior Vice President and Head of Commercial Vehicle Business Innovation at Hyundai Motor Company.
In August 2021, the BMDV announced its funding guidelines for commercial vehicles with alternative drives after approval by the European Commission. Funding is available for battery, fuel cell, and (catenary) hybrid electric vehicles. The BMDV supports the purchase of environmentally friendly commercial vehicles until 2024 with a total budget of 1.6 billion euros.
Competitiveness in Reducing Emissions
Hyundai’s seven German customers initially applied for funding. The approval granted by the BMDV underscores the competitiveness of the XCIENT Fuel Cell in reducing CO2 emissions.
Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility, a joint venture between Hyundai Motor Company and the Swiss company H2 Energy, has established Hyundai Hydrogen Mobility Germany GmbH (HHMG) as an independent company to actively promote the entry into the market for hydrogen-powered commercial vehicles in Germany. HHMG will take over local market distribution, hydrogen refueling stations, customer service, and special vehicle partnerships.
Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell in Detail
The XCIENT Fuel Cell is equipped with a 180 kW hydrogen fuel cell system with two 90 kW fuel cell stacks each. The durability of the fuel cell system and the overall fuel efficiency of the vehicle have been developed to meet the demands of commercial fleet customers. The 350 kW electric motor with a maximum torque of 2,237 Nm also enables powerful performance on inclines and declines in mountainous regions.
Seven Hydrogen Tanks
With seven hydrogen tanks, the XCIENT Fuel Cell offers a combined storage capacity of around 31 kilograms of hydrogen, while a 72 kWh battery pack made up of three high-performance batteries serves as an additional energy source. The manufacturer specifies a maximum range of around 400 kilometers. The seven hydrogen tanks can be fully refilled in about eight to 20 minutes, depending on the ambient temperature.
With this range and quick refueling, fuel cell technology presents an ideal solution for heavy-duty transport.
The XCIENT Fuel Cell, launched by Hyundai in 2020, is the world’s first series-produced hydrogen-powered electric truck for heavy-duty transport. The company has already deployed 47 XCIENT Fuel Cells for 45 customers in Switzerland, where they have covered more than four million kilometers by the end of June 2022.
Consumption and Emission Data
The Hyundai XCIENT Fuel Cell has not yet been homologated for the German market. The homologation and fuel consumption determination of the German version will take place as part of the market launch.
