Austrian Post Launches Own Delivery Service in Slovenia
Jul 26, 2022 at 7:04 PMTo be prepared early for the continuously growing online business of new and existing customers as well as the seasonal increase in orders, Arvato Supply Chain Solutions is further expanding its locations and relying on state-of-the-art warehouse automation. After recently commissioning a new hall with one of the largest AutoStore storage systems in Europe in Dortmund, the expansion in the industrial center Dorsten/Marl now follows.
(Gütersloh/Drosten) The location serves as a logistics hub for six customers from the fashion and lifestyle sector. In Dorsten, a new warehouse with 10,000 square meters of ground area and 16,000 square meters of usable space will be built by mid-2023, equipped with a highly dynamic shuttle system. The investment volume amounts to a larger double-digit million sum.
Shuttle System Accelerates Processes
Construction work on the new logistics hall in Dorsten is already in full swing and is expected to be completed in September of this year. Subsequently, a highly dynamic shuttle system of the latest 2D generation from KNAPP will be implemented, significantly accelerating processes at the location while simultaneously increasing the quality of processing. The shuttle system has a capacity of around 130,000 containers, which can be equipped with up to eight compartments, and a loading and unloading performance of up to 6,800 containers per hour in the future. The storage volume amounts to 8.5 million liters, allowing for approximately 2 million fashion items to be stored there. 345 shuttles move within the system in 16 aisles and can switch between 23 shuttle levels via 22 lifts (11 double lifts). The new shuttle system will be directly connected to the fully automated packaging system that was commissioned in Dorsten last year and has since massively reduced throughput times.
Fast Distribution to the End Customer
In addition to the accelerated processes through the shuttle system and the automatic packaging machine, the central location of the site in Europe also enables fast distribution to the end customer. Due to the proximity to several carrier hubs, late pickup times for delivery the next day can be realized. Furthermore, Arvato’s expanded linehaul network also contributes to the fact that most European countries can be reached overnight on a daily basis. Further optimizations are ensured by the integration of B2C parcel service providers that have proven themselves as “Local Heroes” in their respective destination countries. This allows around 310 million online shoppers in European countries to be reached through their preferred service. This increases the acceptance of online shops and the reorder rate.
Reducing Implementation Times for New Customers
“By using innovative automation solutions, we can reduce implementation times for new customers, further increase the productivity of our locations, and simultaneously minimize the error rate,” says Axel Mayer. “This means we are not only better prepared for the volume growth of our existing customers but also have capacities available for new customers.” To this end, we plan to hire an additional 300 to 500 workers to support the 600-strong team at the location in the future.
