Hydrogen Filling Station for Heavy Goods Transport Planned in Lübeck

A consortium of several energy, logistics, and industrial companies aims to enable CO2-free truck transport in Lübeck and the surrounding area starting in 2023. With the signing of a letter of intent on February 25, the production, distribution, and consumption of green, environmentally friendly hydrogen is now being concretely developed. This will allow for clean freight transport to be offered in the Lübeck region in the near future.

(PresseBox; Lübeck/Heide) The pressure to operate sustainably is steadily increasing. With the impetus from Hypion GmbH from Heide, an H2 transport hub is to be realized in the Hanseatic city of Lübeck by 2023. The economically viable system is emerging from local collaborations. A first group of private and municipal companies has thus come together to ensure the establishment of a functioning value chain involving the production, logistics, distribution, and application of sustainable hydrogen. The conditions for implementation are favorable.

The signatories met at the IHK

The signatories of the joint letter of intent signed on February 25, 2022, at the IHK in Lübeck include, in addition to Hypion GmbH from Heide, the Logistics Initiative Schleswig-Holstein e. V. and the IHK zu Lübeck, the following companies:

Saving 2,000 tons of CO² annually

Each participant demonstrates their commitment to the future and climate protection. “We are proud of the partners in Lübeck who lead by example and want to implement the necessary decarbonization in their industry as pioneers,” says Dr. Stefan Rehm, Development Director of Hypion GmbH. “It shows that in Schleswig-Holstein, future-oriented solutions are being implemented entrepreneurially with courage and drive, and that more than 2,000 tons of CO2 can be saved annually as a contribution to climate protection.”

The first of the planned 20 vehicles primarily come from the logistics and construction sectors. In the operation of the fuel cell electric vehicles, only water vapor will be emitted as exhaust. This means that, among other things, 40-ton trucks will drive CO2-neutral and correspondingly quietly in the future. The companies are making an important contribution with their investment to make transport in the Lübeck region environmentally friendly and are also extending an invitation to other regional, national, and international transport services to refuel in a climate-friendly manner in Lübeck.

Conveniently Located Site Found

A conveniently located site for the filling station has already been found, taking into account other municipal activities. Communication with the city of Lübeck has already begun and is now being concretized for further planning and approval of the hydrogen filling station site. A dedicated project company, Hypion Motion Lübeck GmbH & Co. KG, has been established for the construction and operation of the filling station.

In the presence of Lübeck’s Mayor Jan Lindenau, Hypion GmbH received a funding notification from Energy Transition Minister Jan Philipp Albrecht in June 2021 for the preparation of five hydrogen-based mobility hubs in Schleswig-Holstein. After the first key project in Neumünster has already been reported, Lübeck now follows as another site in Schleswig-Holstein. Experiences from Neumünster will be directly incorporated into the implementation in Lübeck, thereby accelerating the realization.
