Feb 17, 2022 at 4:56 PMThe latest edition provides current figures and well-founded analyses of the key European markets, enabling industry participants to make better business decisions. The download is now available on the FRUIT LOGISTICA website.
Das recently published “European Statistics Handbook 2022” is now available for download on the FRUIT LOGISTICA website. In preparation for the world’s leading trade fair for the fruit trade, taking place from April 5 to 7, 2022, in Berlin, the publication not only offers current figures but also well-founded analyses that help the industry understand production, supply, and trade data from various European markets. The European Handbook 2022 has been expanded to include the countries of Portugal, Austria, Croatia, Hungary, Bulgaria, and Romania. The latter four EU members from Southeast Europe have significant production potential that has so far only been partially utilized.
The five key findings:
- After a slump in out-of-home demand in the first year of the pandemic, the situation in Europe eased somewhat in 2021; however, the levels of the years before 2020 have not yet been reached. Thus, a further increase in the purchasing volumes of fresh fruits and vegetables in retail was not expected. Indeed, preliminary results from various European countries show stagnation or a slight decline in purchasing volumes, but they remain significantly above the levels of 2019. Consumer spending has continued to rise slightly.
- The usual weather-related difficulties were also present in 2021. Frosts in Southern Europe decimated the local stone fruit harvest, while heavy rains in mid-July in Western Europe caused losses, particularly in vegetables. These shortages led to price increases that were often discussed in the media.
- However, costs rose significantly more, especially for energy and fertilizers. Additionally, there was a strong increase in wages. As a result, producers and traders are rarely in a better position than a year ago, despite rising prices. The increased energy prices are causing significant concerns for producers in protected cultivation in Northwestern Europe, leading to later planting than usual for the 2022 season.
Increased logistics costs threaten foreign trade
- Increased logistics costs and an unprecedented shortage of available containers threaten the foreign trade of many export-oriented countries. However, the effects will only be measurable later; in 2021, there were no significant restrictions.
- The impact of Brexit on trade flows was less than feared, with deliveries from the continent to the island only slightly lower than before.
