For Transport Companies, Fuel Card Abuse is a Threat
Jan 18, 2022 at 2:14 PMArvato Supply Chain Solutions is making significant investments in environmentally friendly technologies as part of its sustainability strategy. To date, the internationally operating supply chain and e-commerce service provider has spent around 800,000 euros to make its logistics and distribution centers in its global network more sustainable through various measures.
(Gütersloh/Gennep) This includes the installation of powerful photovoltaic systems, which are currently planned or already implemented at seven locations. Just recently, a solar power plant with 27,076 solar panels was commissioned on the company premises in Heijen, in the Dutch municipality of Gennep. This makes it one of the largest rooftop projects in the Netherlands. It has an output of more than 10,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) per year and covers the energy needs of around 3,300 households.
The special feature of this solar power plant is that the generated energy can not only be used by Arvato Supply Chain Solutions in Gennep. It also supplies the other locations of Arvato Supply Chain Solutions in the Netherlands with green electricity.
“With the photovoltaic system in Gennep, Arvato Supply Chain Solutions reduces its CO2 footprint by 4,100 tons per year, which corresponds to the annual compensation of more than 416,600 trees. This facility makes an important contribution to the company’s overall environmental balance,” explains Marcel Orth, who has driven the project as Operations Excellence Manager at Arvato Supply Chain Solutions in the Netherlands. The goal of the entire Bertelsmann Group, which also includes Arvato Supply Chain Solutions, is to be completely climate-neutral by 2030. “This includes, among other things, that we will switch our electricity consumption to 100 percent green electricity as part of our own climate strategy and reduce site-related greenhouse gases (Scope 1+2) by 50 percent,” explains Andreas Barth, President Tech and Group Head of Corporate Responsibility & Sustainability at Arvato Supply Chain Solutions. “However, since we, as a supply chain management and e-commerce service provider, provide services where we cannot completely avoid greenhouse gas emissions, we will apply compensation measures for the remaining 50 percent.”
Sustainability Measures at Other Locations
Extensive sustainability measures have already been implemented at other locations that contribute to achieving climate goals. In addition to sourcing pure green electricity and switching to LED lighting, modern heat recovery systems with compressed air compressors are used, for example, to continuously reduce gas consumption for heating. Further savings are achieved through retrofitted air filters, night temperature reductions in storage areas, and the coupling of windows and air conditioning systems that turn off as soon as a window is opened. In addition, energy-efficient combined heat and power plants have been installed at some locations as a transitional technology, along with sustainable geothermal systems. “When optimizing, we look very closely at which green technologies and measures are suitable for the location and can be implemented optimally there,” says Olaf Pack, Vice President Real Estate at Arvato Supply Chain Solutions. “Because these projects not only contribute to achieving our climate protection goals but also make an important contribution to promoting sustainability in the respective communities.”
