Dec 3, 2021 at 3:17 PM7.4 million packages were sorted and delivered by Swiss Post in the week around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This is an increase of 100,000 packages compared to the same period in 2020 and marks a new record. Additionally, online shopping continues to grow, and further record volumes are expected next year.
7.4 million packages were sorted by the Post employees in the Black Friday week from November 22 to November 30 in the parcel centers and delivered to people’s homes in Switzerland. This is an increase of 100,000 packages compared to last year (2020: 7.3 million packages) and is a new record. “Our employees have once again proven what they are capable of in recent days,” says Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services at Post and member of the Executive Board. “They can be proud of this.”
On average, the postal workers delivered more than one million packages every day last week, and in the days immediately following Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it was even well over a million packages per day.
New record volumes of packages processed: the Black Friday week and the days thereafter
The sorting machines in the parcel centers were humming for up to 22 hours a day, and the employees worked in special shifts and even on Saturdays to sort all packages on time. Everything went according to plan. There were no mishaps or technical problems, and the weather cooperated as well. “Despite the new record volumes, our services are stable, and the packages arrive on time,” says Johannes Cramer. “Our months of preparation have paid off.” Since summer, the Post has been intensively preparing for the pre-Christmas season and has taken numerous measures to handle the large volumes of packages daily.
Receive packages even faster
Moreover, the volume of packages will continue to grow due to the booming online trade. At the same time, customers want to receive their goods faster. The Post has long been prepared for these developments. It is modernizing its existing parcel infrastructure and continuously expanding its capacities. By 2030, the Post will invest around 1.5 billion Swiss francs for this purpose.
However, the focus is currently on daily operations. For December 14, the planners at the Post expect the highest daily volume in the history of Swiss Post: they anticipate up to 1.5 million packages. “I am convinced that our employees will also manage this record volume of packages,” says Johannes Cramer.
