More Visibility for Supply Chains in Retail
Nov 24, 2021 at 7:05 PMThe Hamburg Chamber of Commerce presents its plans for the Energy and Climate Port Moorburg. With the Future Port Plan, the Chamber introduced the first building block of its location strategy “Hamburg 2040 – how do we want to live in the future and what will we live from?” at the beginning of the year. The plan aims to make the port a driver of innovation and a motor for the Hamburg economy.
(Hamburg) The Hamburg Chamber of Commerce is actively involved in the development of the new port development plan of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. A key objective of the Future Port Plan for the Chamber is the synergistic development of the port and the city. “It is clear to us: In order for the port to fulfill its platform function for the Hamburg economy, it needs additional areas. In our view, these are located in the western part of the city,” says Prof. Norbert Aust, President of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce. “Hamburg now needs a climate and energy port to initiate the climate transition and the transformation in the port. For innovative, port-related research, for example in the field of hydrogen, we therefore see the Moorburg port expansion area as a suitable site.”
With the development perspective of the Moorburg power plant into a hydrogen electrolyzer, the Senate is already providing important impulses. However, the Senate has also made it clear that a port expansion in Moorburg is politically not feasible in the coming years. “The climate transition and the transformation in the port cannot afford to wait,” says Aust. “We have therefore specified our plans for a climate and energy port to demonstrate potential land use while simultaneously creating a fair perspective for the residents of Moorburg.” According to the Chamber, neither the status as a port expansion area nor the planning for the western expansion of the port should be shaken. It is now about quickly advancing the infrastructure expansion with the climate and energy port as well as the A26 East to ensure a successful development of the port and economic location.
Moorburg as a Center for Research and Development
The plans of the Hamburg Chamber of Commerce aim to make Moorburg a center for research and development, renewable energies, green hydrogen, alternative fuels, and fuel cell technology. With a Hy-Tech Park, an E-Fuel Hub, and a fuel cell plant, approximately 153.6 hectares are to be newly utilized, creating around 6,400 new jobs. At the same time, this concept offers the village of Moorburg a new perspective as a district with a better quality of life for its residents.
“For over 30 years, there has been uncertainty among the residents about the future of their village,” says David Ghrim, spokesperson for the Round Table Moorburg. “With the Chamber’s concept of the energy and climate port, it gains a new perspective and can become a place of new beginnings, innovation, and lived old, but also new neighborhoods.” Many detailed questions remain unresolved, but the residents are open to such a solution.
Supplement to Research Institutions in Southern Hamburg
“The concept is a good complement to the research institutions and companies already established in southern Hamburg in the field of renewable energies,” says Franziska Wedemann, chair of the Hamburg South Chamber Committee. “The recently announced innovation and technology center focused on hydrogen technology for aviation and shipping (ITZ Nord) in Northern Germany could serve as a suitable nucleus and impetus for the Moorburg Hy-Tech Park with its Hamburg component.”
