Fraunhofer IML Offers Virtual Forklift Training

The virtual reality simulator “LiftNick” from the Fraunhofer Institute for Material Flow and Logistics IML supports forklift drivers in training processes. It is now being made available in collaboration with the simulator manufacturer “KW automotive” for vocational schools and companies.

(Dortmund) The first prototype of the forklift simulator “LiftNick” was developed by researchers at Fraunhofer IML in collaboration with the logistics service provider DB Schenker.

The processes run just like in a real warehouse: The forklift driver navigates through the aisles, transports goods, and completes palletizing tasks. However, there is a difference when training with the forklift simulator “LiftNick” from Fraunhofer IML: Users train the workflows in virtual reality (VR). They sit in a simulator with a steering wheel and joystick and move through the digital representation of a real existing warehouse using a VR headset. There, they can interact with the forklift and objects such as the scanner or the logbook, allowing them to practice the processes in the warehouse realistically.

The first prototype of the forklift simulator “LiftNick” was developed by researchers at Fraunhofer IML in collaboration with the logistics service provider DB Schenker. Now, the simulators are being sold as a license to companies and vocational schools in collaboration with “KW automotive,” which also builds simulators for e-sports.

Users Fully Immerse Themselves in a Digital World

“Through collaboration with our industry partner, all interested parties can now design their training with our software and benefit from the advantages of a serious game,” says Christoph Schlüter, a research associate at Fraunhofer IML.

Serious games are training applications that include playful elements such as high scores. With the help of a virtual reality headset, users fully immerse themselves in the digital world, which sustainably enhances the learning effect. In virtual reality, drivers train various processes such as the start and end of shifts. Exceptional situations can also be simulated, which strengthens the drivers’ awareness of hazards. The direct audiovisual feedback and playful elements increase motivation, leading to efficient training. The software also allows operations in the real warehouse to continue without interruption for training.

Training is for Forklift Drivers with a License

The training is aimed at forklift drivers who already possess a forklift license. In addition to training, the software supports safety instruction, which drivers must complete annually. Furthermore, researchers at Fraunhofer IML can virtually represent any warehouse environments upon request. This allows drivers to familiarize themselves with a new warehouse in advance, eliminating the need to train on-site first.
