Nov 2, 2021 at 4:34 PMDematic has automated a new central warehouse at the BMZ Group’s headquarters in Karlstein. As part of the consolidation of several warehouses, the innovation leader in high-performance battery systems commissioned the intralogistics specialist to install an automatic small parts warehouse (AKL) with conveyor technology.
(Heusenstamm/Karlstein) The new central warehouse of the BMZ Group now supplies the production of high-tech battery systems that are integrated into various products of renowned brands worldwide. Shelf storage and conveyor technology meet the specific requirements of the BMZ Group for handling goods weighing up to 100 kilograms.
“Until now, several warehouses were in operation at the site. The unified central goods receiving warehouse, which Dematic has automated, makes the supply of production for our three units on-site significantly more reliable and efficient,” explains Thomas Oschmann, Project Manager Logistics BMZ Group Karlstein. The BMZ Group is a leader in the entire product life cycle for lithium-ion battery systems used across various industries. Founded in 1994, the company has been continuously developing lithium-ion batteries together with customers and its own development team for 20 years – from prototype construction to series production.
Well Positioned
“In our series production, we were already highly technological to fully automated before. Now we are also well positioned in the supply of production and the removal of unnecessary components,” adds Oschmann.
In the 23-meter-high shelf storage in the upper floor, Dematic RapidStore ML 20 miniloads ensure smooth handling of battery components for a total of 2,192 locations with a performance of 100 shelves per hour in both inbound and outbound storage. Conveyor technology with a throughput of 300 shelves per hour ensures seamless connectivity to production. The heavy-duty accumulation roller conveyors fully meet the requirements for goods weighing up to 100 kilograms.
Narrow-Aisle Forklifts from Linde
The inbound and outbound storage of items in the pallet warehouse in the adjacent logistics center with 10,000 storage locations is handled by narrow-aisle forklifts from KION Group sister company Linde Material Handling. The goods handling specialist has also supplied tractors for the supply and disposal of production. The overall logistics concept is rounded off by four pick-to-light workstations that Dematic has designed and installed space-saving on two levels in the ground floor. A Dematic material flow computer ensures efficient material flow control.
“The project was characterized by a harmonious and collaborative partnership between the BMZ Group and the KION companies Dematic and Linde Material Handling. This has led to a convincing result,” summarizes Oschmann.
