Oct 7, 2021 at 3:53 PMVolvo Trucks has received an order from DFDS, one of the largest logistics companies in Northern Europe, for the delivery of over 100 Volvo FM Electric trucks. This is the largest commercial order for electric trucks from Volvo Trucks to date and one of the largest for heavy electric trucks worldwide.
(Ismaning/Copenhagen) The first Volvo FM Electric was handed over to DFDS in August by Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks (right). The delivery of the remaining 100 trucks will begin in the fourth quarter of next year.
“This is an important milestone in our commitment to fossil-free transport. I am very proud of the partnership we have with DFDS. Together, we are showing the world that electrified heavy-duty transport is already a viable solution today. I believe this will encourage many more customers to take their first step towards electrification,” comments Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
The first deliveries of the Volvo FM Electric to DFDS will take place in the fourth quarter of 2022 and will continue throughout 2023. The trucks can be used for both short and long transports within the DFDS logistics system in Europe.
Contribution to a sustainable supply chain
“At DFDS, we are determined to do our part in reducing CO2 emissions and creating a sustainable supply chain. We know how important electrification is on the path to achieving our CO2 targets, and I hope we can inspire others as we drive this important transition forward,” explains Niklas Andersson, Executive Vice President and Head of the Logistics Division at DFDS.
The Volvo FM Electric can have a weight of up to 44 tons (gross weight) and has a range of up to 300 kilometers. The vehicles can be charged both overnight at the depot (each truck comes with an AC charger) and via High Power Charging during operation (DC Charging). DFDS has opted for a financing solution from Volvo Financial Services.
Breakthrough for electric trucks in Europe
The trend towards electrification in the heavy truck market is accelerating. In Europe, several hundred electric trucks over 16 tons have been registered this year so far. About 40 percent of these are electric trucks from Volvo Trucks.
“Our clear goal is to drive the transformation of electric trucks forward. Our market-leading position shows that we are definitely on the right track. Our goal for 2030 is for half of our trucks delivered worldwide to be electric vehicles. We are pleased that the growing interest from our customers is now reflected in actual orders, not least with this impressive order from DFDS,” says Roger Alm, President of Volvo Trucks.
Product range of six electric truck models
Volvo Trucks started series production of electric commercial vehicles in 2019 as one of the first truck brands. The product range now includes six electric truck models – the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, Volvo FMX, Volvo FE, Volvo FL, and the Volvo VNR, which is sold in North America.
