Sep 3, 2021 at 7:15 PMSustainable and ergonomic: TORWEGGE GmbH & Co. KG has installed a new, eco-friendly packaging system from Sealed Air®. Instead of using bubble wrap, the system operates with recycled paper. This reduces the CO2 emissions of the Bielefeld-based company. At the same time, the intralogistics specialist improves the ergonomics of the workplaces in shipping.
(Bielefeld) The system provides the packaging material at a reachable height, allowing work to be done without physically straining bending and twisting movements. This also reduces the time required per package. Furthermore, the walking distances for employees in the logistics area are now significantly shorter, which also contributes to relief.
“Our products stand for quality and sustainability. As a family business, we are very aware of our social responsibility. With the new packaging system, we address both aspects by reducing our CO2 footprint on one hand and providing our employees with improved workplaces on the other,” says Uwe Eschment, Managing Director of TORWEGGE GmbH & Co. KG. In the search for an ecological solution, the company quickly became aware of Sealed Air®. The globally active packaging specialist develops innovative solutions and relies on materials that are 100 percent recyclable and biodegradable.
Relief for Employees
The new system is used in TORWEGGE’s logistics, where wheels, rollers, and conveyor technology components are prepared for shipping. The goods are now packaged in recycled paper instead of the bubble wrap commonly used in the industry. With this solution, TORWEGGE also relieves its employees. The packaging material is provided at ergonomic reaching height at the workstations. Previously, it was dispensed from the side, requiring a twisting motion from the employee for each package. This is no longer necessary. “In addition, the entire workflow is optimized and the walking distances are shortened,” says Eschment.
Through a Chute into the Collection Containers
To achieve this, the paper system was placed on a platform. The paper cushions are transported via a chute into a collection container installed above the respective packing table. The container can be refilled at the push of a button. Additionally, it holds up to 1.5 kilometers of paper, which reduces the time required for refilling and thus the average time spent per package. Furthermore, TORWEGGE creates additional space for storing its products through the space-saving installation on the platform.
