Sep 1, 2021 at 7:35 PMOn August 30, Hansa Destinations launched its first service from Nynäshamn, Sweden, to Rostock, Germany. The new route offers logistics companies and other customers a new transport alternative that reduces emissions by at least 20 percent by promoting a shift from road to sea.
(Rostock/Nynäshamn) Hansa Destinations is the new Ro/Pax ferry line from Rederi AB Gotland, which will transport both cargo and passengers between Nynäshamn and Rostock. With the new service, Rederi AB Gotland and Hansa Destinations enable the shift of freight transport from road to sea, providing a more environmentally friendly freight alternative. By shifting truck traffic to the sea route between Rostock and Nynäshamn, emissions will be reduced by at least 20 percent.
“We are very pleased with the launch of Hansa Destinations. At full capacity, the new service will be able to offer the transition of more than 75,000 trucks from land to sea annually, thus reducing transport emissions. Hansa Destinations is one of many steps we are taking to reduce emissions while also providing logistics companies and other customers with additional transport options,” says Håkan Johansson, CEO of Rederi AB Gotland.
Inauguration Ceremony on Board the MS Drotten
To celebrate the launch of Hansa Destinations, an inauguration ceremony took place on August 31 aboard the M/S Drotten in the Rostock Overseas Port. The ceremony was attended by Claus Ruhe Madsen, Mayor of the City of Rostock, Per Thöresson, Ambassador to Germany, Christian Pegel, Minister for Energy, Infrastructure and Digitalization of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT.
“Rostock is an established ferry and RoRo port with a wide range of services to Denmark, Sweden, and Finland, which is unique in this combination and frequency for a German Baltic Sea port. The new route to Nynäshamn (and Visby) perfectly complements the existing route network and offers new opportunities for both the transport industry and passengers. We thank Rederi AB Gotland for making Rostock even more attractive,” says Dr. Gernot Tesch, Managing Director of ROSTOCK PORT.
Government Funding in the Founding Phase
Hansa Destinations received government funding during its founding phase as part of the Swedish Eco-Bonus Program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Hansa Destinations, a sister company of Destination Gotland, also offers passengers traveling between Germany and Sweden a new alternative. The sailing time is 18 hours, with departures planned for the evening and arrival the next day. Selected departures will also call at Visby on the island of Gotland.
