Aug 16, 2021 at 5:39 PMAfter almost half a year of operation, it is time for the operators of the GREENFERRY I to take stock. Questions about whether the launch was sensible despite Corona, whether the summer business with tourists, campers, and mini-cruisers brings the required numbers, or whether the freight business is economically viable can fortunately be answered positively.
(Brunsbüttel) The GREENFERRY I is on the right track to establish itself as an indispensable mode of transport and will soon be an integral part of the infrastructure network. In terms of environmental friendliness, the GREENFERRY I keeps its promise and sets the right course with the fuel LNG (Liquified Natural Gas). The ship is more environmentally friendly than ferries powered by ship diesel, and the figures from the past months clearly support this.
By using LNG, the combustion of a total of 2,000 tons of ship diesel has been avoided, resulting in up to 90 percent less nitrogen oxides and 20 percent less CO2 emissions. Furthermore, liquefied natural gas almost completely reduces fine dust, and sulfur dioxide is not produced at all. Just a few days ago, the GREENFERRY I was supplied with LNG for the 100th time by truck at the Steubenhöft in Cuxhaven by the companies LIQUID Marine and GasCom. Since March of this year, the fuel has been efficiently and safely bunkered by the professional suppliers.
Future Biogas from Germany
Currently, LNG is traditionally extracted from conventional natural gas sources in the Arab region. It is transported by ship to Belgium and then further transported to Cuxhaven from the LNG terminal in Zeebrugge. However, the future promises even more sustainability, as LNG is to be produced from renewable biogas liquefaction plants in Germany.
Elbferry is already actively working on this implementation with partner companies GasCom and LIQUIND. The managing directors of Elbferry GmbH & Co. KG, Heinrich Ahlers and Christian Strahlmann, are always able to guarantee the punctual adherence to the schedule thanks to the safe and regular fuel supply from the suppliers LIQUID Marine and GasCom, while also enhancing environmental protection along the German North Sea coast.
