Jun 28, 2021 at 5:08 PMVolvo Trucks is well-prepared with its recently launched Volvo FH, FM, and FMX electric vehicles to drive a rapid shift towards more sustainable transport solutions and a significant upswing in the electrification of heavy commercial vehicle traffic. Thanks to groundbreaking technology based on shared platforms, they are excellently suited for a variety of transport tasks, making it easier for many transport companies to enter the world of electromobility.
(Ismaning) With the launch of three new fully electric trucks – the Volvo FH, Volvo FM, and Volvo FMX – Volvo Trucks can now offer its customers a range of a total of six electrified truck models. Production of the new trucks will begin in the second half of 2022, initially with tractors. Chassis are expected to follow in early 2023.
The new heavy trucks for regional transport and construction offer a permissible gross weight (GVW) of up to 44 tons and are available in two alternative chassis heights, with wheelbases ranging from 3,800 to 6,700 mm and in configurations with two, three, or four axles.
“Our new electric trucks are based on the same highly successful platform as their diesel or gas-powered counterparts. They offer high flexibility and are suitable for a wide range of transport requirements,” says Jonas Odermalm, Vice President of Electromobility Product Management at Volvo Trucks.
Unique Drive Unit
Three electric motors are coupled with Volvo Trucks’ proven I-Shift transmission, which features a unique new shifting strategy optimized for electric operation. Together, the motors and the I-Shift transmission form a powerful electric drive unit that provides an unprecedented, highly efficient driving experience – with a combined electric motor output of 490 kW (666 hp) and a transmission torque of up to 28,000 Nm.
“As the truck always starts in the highest possible gear, energy efficiency and savings are achieved thanks to a minimum number of gear shifts. Of course, lower gears are available for steep roads or starting situations that require more torque and control,” explains Jonas Odermalm.
For the auxiliary drive, the following three options are available: an electric (40 kW), an electromechanical (70 kW), and a transmission-side (150 kW).
Next-Generation Batteries with High Energy Density
The high-energy-density traction batteries utilize the latest generation of lithium-ion cell technology and are assembled in a Volvo production facility. An electrically powered truck with six battery packs can store up to 540 kWh. This enables a range of up to 300 km*.
Flexible Fast Charging
The trucks offer two charging options: alternating current charging of up to 43 kW, ideal for overnight charging, or a much faster direct current charging of up to 250 kW. This is very useful when working two shifts or when you need to charge the vehicle during lunch breaks to gain additional range. With a direct current charger with a capacity of 250 kW, it is possible to charge up to 80 percent of the battery capacity in less than 90 minutes**.
Seamless Transition to Electromobility for Carriers
In addition to electric trucks, Volvo Trucks also offers a complete package of service, maintenance, and financing solutions specifically designed for transport companies to support them in a smoother and faster transition to electrified transport.
“For entrepreneurs, it is important that the transition to electric trucks can be gradual, smooth, and simple. They will have a mixed fleet with different drivetrains for many years and can continue to use systems like Dynafleet as well as the same service provider for all their Volvo Trucks. The drivetrain may differ, but the rest is very similar, making the switch to electric trucks seamless and logical,” concludes Jonas Odermalm.
