May 26, 2021 at 5:15 PMJungheinrich’s new electric pallet truck ERD 220i has been awarded the Red Dot Design Award as “Best of the Best.” The vehicle, which is about 25 percent shorter than its predecessor model thanks to its new lithium-ion battery concept, impressed the jury with its innovative power and groundbreaking design.
(Hamburg) Jungheinrich wins the Red Dot Design Award with its pallet truck ERD 220i. Its compact design combined with advanced technology and maximum functionality makes it, according to the jury, an exemplary pioneer in the pallet truck segment.
Andreas Knie, Industrial Designer at Jungheinrich, says: “Good product design responds to specific customer needs and creates suitable solutions. The ERD 220i consistently combines the most compact dimensions, intuitive operability, noticeable agility, and reliable safety without displacing each other. The operator is provided with an ergonomically designed, versatile, and safe driver workstation, while at the same time, the radically reduced dimensions create more space and freedom of movement in the warehouse.”
Elimination of the bulky battery tray
Instead of installing a large battery between the drive platform and the forks as before, Jungheinrich has integrated the battery modules within the vehicle chassis in the ERD 220i. The elimination of the bulky battery tray offers significant advantages in vehicle performance. The saved space allows the vehicle to be offered in two spacious platform variants without making relevant compromises in terms of compactness and agility. Both platforms have fixed side protection walls on three sides, ensuring safe driving and comfortable standing. At the same time, the ERD 220i, with its L2 dimension of only 1,065 mm, is the most compact vehicle in its class. Thanks to the small dimensions, the turning radius shrinks to under two meters. This enables precise maneuvering even in the tightest spaces and creates new opportunities to better utilize areas in existing warehouses.
Since 1955, the Red Dot Award Product Design has annually honored the world’s best and most innovative products in over 50 categories. An international jury of independent designers, design professors, and journalists selects each year from several thousand submissions those products that stand out particularly for their design quality.
