May 17, 2021 at 7:35 PMLIS Logistische Informationssysteme AG welcomes a prominent new addition to its recently completed data center. From now on, the Greven-based software specialist will also host the Transport Management System of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH from Wolfsburg. The new data center of LIS has been specifically upgraded with two powerful servers for this project.
(Greven/Wolfsburg) “Data is the heart of every company; its security and availability are essential. Therefore, choosing a hosting provider is of strategic importance. We are even more pleased that Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH is now relying on our expertise in this area as well,” says Magnus Wagner, board member of LIS Logistische Informationssysteme AG.
Just earlier this year, the logistics software manufacturer put a new data center into operation at its headquarters in Greven. Specifically for the order from the Wolfsburg logistics company, it has now been upgraded with two servers. Johannes Willenberg, head of technology at LIS, states: “Acquiring dedicated hardware for a single customer is rather unusual. However, in this case, the data volume made it unavoidable. The DMS database alone is three terabytes in size.”
Data on Two Servers Since Early April
The data of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH has been managed on two Lenovo SR650 servers since early April, which have processors totaling 48 physical cores and are equipped with 512 gigabytes of RAM and eight terabytes of hard disk storage each. 40 virtual machines have been installed to represent the entire environment of Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH, including its international locations. Both uploads and downloads occur via a redundantly designed one-gigabit line.
“The data transfer still took five hours,” reports Willenberg. And this was without the three terabyte document database of the logistics company. Its transfer was done via courier on a hard drive. “That was definitely faster,” laughs Willenberg.
Three Months of Preparation
The head of technology at LIS, along with his team, invested three months of preparation into the project. The tight timeframe for the data migration required meticulous planning of all workflows and processes. The LIS team had only 40 hours, from Saturday morning to Sunday evening, to implement the migration and ensure uninterrupted operations for Schnellecke Transportlogistik GmbH. It was advantageous that the logistics provider has been a LIS customer since 2016 and uses nearly all modules of the Transport Management System WinSped. “Therefore, there were already many good connections at the technical level, which greatly facilitated coordination,” reports Willenberg. “In the end, we even managed to implement additional version updates of WinSped.”
