The new central European logistics hub of PUMA is one of the most modern fulfillment centers for fashion. Up to 74 million items can be delivered annually: quickly, efficiently, and reliably.
(Marchtrenk/A; Geiselwind) On April 6, 2021, the European central warehouse of the sports company PUMA SE in the Bavarian municipality of Geiselwind commenced operations. The successful go-live of the highly automated logistics hub is another milestone in the collaboration between PUMA and TGW.
PUMA SE consolidates its European logistics in a state-of-the-art intralogistics system at a central location and operates one of the world’s most efficient fulfillment centers for fashion. The 63,000 m² omni-channel distribution center supplies retailers and online customers. The innovative system is another milestone in PUMA’s FOREVER FASTER strategy. It forms the basis for quickly and reliably supplying customers across Europe with products from the sports goods specialist.
Short Lead Times, Highest Performance
After the groundbreaking in 2019, an innovative logistics system was created, focusing on speed and highest performance. Thanks to the close, collaborative partnership of the companies involved in the project, the demanding schedule was adhered to – despite the impacts of the Corona pandemic.
The powerful core of the facility is an extremely flexible FlashPick® system from TGW, specialized in the combination of various distribution channels. Covering an area of about nine football fields, there are more than 700,000 storage locations for shoes, fashion, and accessories. 500 shuttle robots automatically store the boxes before they are picked and then packed. They are transported via a network of more than 21 kilometers of energy-efficient KingDrive® conveyor technology.
Forever Faster in Intralogistics
“Fast and sustainable logistics is what Geiselwind stands for. And TGW, as the general contractor for intralogistics, has played an important role in this. We thank you for the excellent and collaborative partnership,” emphasizes Maximilian Molkenthin, Senior Head of Logistics PUMA SE.
Especially impressive: The entire process of handling a customer order takes an average of only ten minutes. Up to 74 million items per year will thus find their way to PUMA’s business and online customers across Europe in the future. Thanks to short lead times and highest performance, quickly, efficiently, and reliably – and thus Forever Faster.
“We are very pleased to be the intralogistics partner in this flagship project and to be able to contribute our expertise and decades of experience as a general contractor,” emphasizes Johann Steinkellner, CEO Central Europe TGW Logistics Group. “The intelligent and powerful TGW FlashPick® system guarantees the highest performance in deliveries and significantly increases efficiency in order fulfillment. This prepares PUMA optimally for the future.”
Green Logistics in Focus
A total of around 200 million euros have been invested in the CO2-neutral logistics hub, certified to Leed Gold standards. Special focus was placed on sustainability, energy efficiency, and environmental compatibility: among other things, through an optimally insulated building envelope, a photovoltaic system covering several thousand square meters, the use of certified green electricity, and particularly energy-efficient intralogistics modules: TGW KingDrive® reduces energy consumption by up to 30 percent compared to conventional conveyor technology systems.
