The logistics and transshipment area has been expanded, paving the way for further business growth. The site in Kalsdorf is extremely well-connected and includes a 16,500 square meter logistics hall as well as a transshipment area of 6,500 square meters.
(Lauterach/Kalsdorf) The international transport and logistics company Gebrüder Weiss has opened a new location in Kalsdorf near Graz. The state-of-the-art terminal, with a total area of around 70,000 square meters, replaces the previous logistics facility in the Styrian capital. The logistics company has invested around 28 million euros in the new building, which was completed in less than a year. “We had reached the capacity limits at the old location. The new facility allows us to grow further and provide even better service for our customers. Our 180 employees are looking forward to taking advantage of the new infrastructural opportunities in this regard,” says Gerhard Haas, branch manager of Gebrüder Weiss Graz.
Double the number of loading ramps
The site in Kalsdorf is located in close proximity to the A9 and A2 motorways and includes, among other things, a 16,500 square meter logistics hall as well as a transshipment area of 6,500 square meters. The number of loading ramps has more than doubled to 92. State-of-the-art video and freight measurement systems ensure safe and efficient loading of trucks. Ecological aspects also played a significant role in the site planning. Construction of a photovoltaic system is expected to begin in the second quarter of 2021. “This will allow us to produce 920 megawatt hours of electricity per year and save up to 75 tons of CO2,” explains Haas.
Growing shipment volume
The Graz location is a central transshipment point within the Gebrüder Weiss network for transports to Southeast Europe. Despite the Corona crisis, the volume of shipments in land transport increased by three percent in 2020 compared to the previous year. The strongest growth driver was the home delivery business, which achieved an increase of 38 percent with 72,100 shipments. The logistics solutions sector also developed positively, gaining well-known customers from the automotive, consumer goods, and metal processing industries in recent years. “We are rooted in the region and primarily support the local economy with our logistics services,” says Haas.
The branch manager also places great importance on training. In 2020, 14 trainees were under contract. “We will maintain this level this year as well,” emphasizes Gerhard Haas, highlighting the company’s responsibility as a traditional training provider. Currently, dispatchers for national and international transport are particularly sought after.
