Mar 15, 2021 at 6:53 PMAnother milestone achieved for GVZ Augsburg. Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer confirms the funding for the container terminal in the Freight Transport Center (GVZ) region of Augsburg. This allows DB Netz AG to swiftly advance planning and construction.
(Augsburg) In a video conference on March 10, 2021, Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer virtually and symbolically presented the funding commitment in the higher double-digit million range for the container terminal in the GVZ region of Augsburg to Eva Weber, the Mayor of Augsburg and Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of GVZ Development Measures GmbH. The container terminal is now included in the federal needs plan. For this decision, DB Netz AG, in coordination with the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) and the Federal Railway Authority (EBA), has confirmed a positive cost-benefit ratio for the existing plans. With the current building rights, DB Netz AG can advance the planning of the transshipment facility for combined transport together with the EBA. The next milestone is detailed time and project plans.
Andreas Scheuer, Federal Minister for Transport and Digital Infrastructure: “The expansion and new construction of transshipment facilities for combined transport as a key point for an effective connection of transport modes is of great importance to the federal government. I am pleased that we have succeeded in securing the construction of the terminal in the GVZ region of Augsburg within the funding regime of the needs plan.”
Important Building Block for the City of Augsburg
Eva Weber, Mayor of the City of Augsburg: “We are pleased to be able to advance the project together with DB Netz. The container terminal is an important building block for the City of Augsburg and the entire region. Sufficient transshipment capacity at the intersection of rail and road not only ensures economic success but also significantly contributes to climate protection.”
Michael Wörle, Mayor of the City of Gersthofen: “The container terminal in the Freight Transport Center will significantly relieve the roads with increasing freight traffic and gives our resident companies, some of which operate globally, more opportunities to make their transport sustainable.”
Richard Greiner, Mayor of the City of Neusäß: “Since my term began in 2014, I have had the pleasure of attending many groundbreaking ceremonies and company openings in the Freight Transport Center. I am very pleased that our terminal is now tangible for the resident businesses and future investors, making future transport concepts more planable.”
Volker Ullrich, directly elected Member of Parliament for the City of Augsburg and Königsbrunn: “With the high funding from the federal government, the terminal at GVZ can finally be realized. This opens a new chapter in logistics for the Augsburg region and helps to shift freight transport to rail.”
As Much Traffic as Possible on the Rail
Hansjörg Durz, directly elected Member of Parliament for Augsburg Land: “As a former mayor of the City of Neusäß, I have accompanied the Freight Transport Center from the very beginning. With the terminal, we are fulfilling our cross-city vision from the 1990s to shift as much traffic as possible to rail.”
Ralf Schmidtmann, Managing Director of GVZ Development Measures GmbH for the Cities of Augsburg, Gersthofen, and Neusäß: “Logistics companies in combined transport show enormous interest in the container terminal, as do numerous shippers in the region. With our land offerings in the planned Intermodal Service Park, we can meet specific settlement needs, making access to rail even easier and more reliable.”
Of the 61 hectares of usable space in the 112-hectare GVZ region of Augsburg, 80 percent has now been marketed. The largest available area is the 85,000 m² Intermodal Service Park at the future container terminal. Currently, there are still areas available in the second half of the Service Park SO10 for office, retail, or gastronomy properties. Smaller remaining areas are available for logistics companies.
