The handover of the two emission-free trucks took place in a festive setting. Two more FUSO vehicles are planned for Salzburg and Innsbruck.
(Vienna/Linz) The internationally active logistics service provider DB Schenker is consistently pursuing its sustainability strategy and is putting two fully electric and emission-free light trucks – FUSO eCanter trucks from the Daimler Trucks brand – into operation for transport in Austria. On Friday, March 12, 2021, the ceremonial handover took place in the presence of DI (FH) Hans-Jürgen Salmhofer, MSc, Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, Mag. Alexander Winter, DB Schenker CEO for Austria and Southeast Europe, and Maximo Lopez Alvarez, DB Schenker Senior Vice President Land Transport in Austria and Southeast Europe, in front of the DB Schenker headquarters in Vienna. The manufacturer Daimler Trucks was represented by Andreas Prummer, Sales Manager Austria, and Ronald Moser, Key Account Manager.
“Climate neutrality by 2040 is a lofty goal. This is especially true for transportation. Goods transport will be handled in a climate-neutral, renewable, and energy-saving manner in the future. Innovative companies like DB Schenker are all the more important, as they already demonstrate today with the two new electric delivery vehicles what will be commonplace tomorrow,” says DI (FH) Hans-Jürgen Salmhofer, MSc, Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology.
Reduce transport emissions by 40% by 2030
“DB Schenker has set itself the goal of becoming the leading provider of green logistics and reducing specific transport emissions by 40% by 2030. With the deployment of fully electric light trucks in the city center of Vienna, we are getting much closer to this goal and are implementing CO2-free city logistics,” says Mag. Alexander Winter, CEO of DB Schenker in Austria and Southeast Europe.
“We are very proud to successfully start our ECO Year 2021 with the first two FUSO eCanters. From now on, DB Schenker will be operating emission-free and quietly in Vienna and Linz for our customers. Two more vehicles will follow for Salzburg and Innsbruck,” reports Maximo Lopez Alvarez, DB Schenker Senior Vice President Land Transport in Austria and Southeast Europe. “With the eCanter, we can transport up to 3.2 tons in an environmentally friendly manner with a power of 129 kW. We are very pleased to elevate our European network with a total of 41 locally emission-free FUSO eCanter trucks to the next level with our four eCanter trucks. Together, we contribute to reducing noise and environmental pollution in major cities in eleven European countries.
The close partnership with Daimler Truck will further advance this innovation, and we are confident that we will gain many insights for the next generation of this innovation together. Additionally, we have already been relying on cargo bikes in the Salzburg area for some time. We are also developing comprehensive goals towards City HUBs in 2021 and are working on new and innovative software solutions to sustainably reduce the kilometers driven by our fleet while maintaining our excellent quality.”
“We are very pleased to hand over the first four locally emission-free FUSO eCanter trucks in Austria to DB Schenker,” says Andreas Prummer, Sales Manager of Daimler Trucks in Austria. “Together, we are making logistics traffic in Austria’s cities a little quieter and cleaner. I would like to thank DB Schenker for their long-standing trust in our transport solutions!”
Fully Electric Through Europe’s Cities
The fully electric light truck has a power of 129 kW and a payload of up to 3.2 tons. The 7.49-ton truck has a range of at least 100 km, making it ideally suited for the distribution traffic in Vienna. The battery of the FUSO eCanter can be easily charged overnight with AC or DC chargers. A fast charger can even reduce the charging time to about one and a half hours. DB Schenker has already successfully deployed the emission-free eCanters for urban distribution in numerous European metropolises such as Oslo, Paris, Berlin, and Madrid.
In combination with cargo bikes that can transport up to 250 kilograms, the electric light truck makes a significant contribution to reducing noise and environmental pollution in urban centers.
As a pioneer in environmental protection, DB Schenker has already launched numerous initiatives to sustainably reduce CO2 emissions despite increasing transport volumes in freight transport. To further highlight the issue of the environment, DB Schenker has designated 2021 as the “ECO Year,” in which the logistics service provider aims to draw attention to efficient resource management.
