Lufthansa Cargo Renovates Air Freight Center in Frankfurt

The Supervisory Board of Lufthansa Cargo in Germany has decided to invest in expanding the most important logistics location for the air freight industry in Frankfurt/Main. The start is set for this year and will be gradually expanded until 2028 while operations continue.

(Frankfurt/Main) Lufthansa Cargo will modularly further develop and renew the logistics center at its home hub in Frankfurt. The Supervisory Board of the German air freight company has approved corresponding investments in a comprehensive infrastructure program for the logistics center. The complete modernization of the Lufthansa Cargo Center began in January 2021 and is expected to be completed by 2028.

“With this renewal of our logistics center, we are investing in our air freight location in Frankfurt, thereby creating the structural prerequisites for even faster and more efficient air freight. This also secures the jobs of our employees at our most important logistics location in Germany for the future,” explains Peter Gerber, CEO of the cargo airline.

Responding Flexibly to Customer Needs

“The special aspect of our infrastructure program is that it can flexibly respond to market developments and changing customer needs,” emphasizes Harald Gloy, Chief Operations Officer of Lufthansa Cargo. “The comprehensively designed upgrading of the building infrastructure, combined with improvements to the logistics system and internal material flows, will further increase the handling speed of shipments as well as the service quality for all customers of Lufthansa Cargo.”

The freight center in Frankfurt is the home hub of Lufthansa Cargo, where around 80 percent of its global freight volume is handled. The carrier’s commitment to digitalization, new product requirements, and the increasing importance of eCommerce have changed the demands on the logistics center. In the first phase of the modularly planned infrastructure program, the construction of the central high-bay warehouse at the Lufthansa Cargo Center is currently underway. In addition to new constructions, existing building parts and warehouses will also be modernized as part of the eight-year infrastructure project. The renovation and renewal of the buildings will take place during ongoing operations. The modular approach ensures that there will be no restrictions for customers.
