Jan 12, 2021 at 8:00 PMThe Port of Hamburg announces a new shipping service with the Turkish ports of Mersin and Iskenderun. This service is operated by the shipping company CMA CGM. Five container ships with weekly departures and capacities ranging from 3,800 to 4,200 TEU are deployed on this route.
(Hamburg) With the arrival of the “CMA CGM WHITE SHARK,” the new container shipping service “NC LEVANT EXPRESS” started in Hamburg on January 9, 2021. The service operated by CMA CGM deploys a total of five container ships with slot capacities between 3,800 and 4,200 TEU (20-foot standard containers). With this new service, the Port of Hamburg gains another connection to ports in Turkey.
The Turkish ports of Mersin and Iskenderun are served by the “NC LEVANT EXPRESS” with weekly departures. The EUROGATE Container Terminal in Hamburg handles the container service. The ports called before Hamburg are Antwerp, Le Havre, Tangier, Malta, Alexandria, Damietta, Beirut, Mersin, Iskenderun, Algeciras, Southampton, and Rotterdam.
Attractive Transit Times
“With the new ‘NC LEVANT EXPRESS,’ we offer attractive transit times and thus very good transport options between two important Turkish ports, the eastern Levant, and five key European ports. Hamburg is very well positioned as a northern hub with its dense network of feeder services for this service. Import and export cargo can thus be quickly transshipped via feeders towards Scandinavia and other countries in the Baltic region,” says Peter Wolf, Managing Director of CMA CGM (Germany) GmbH.
Container traffic between Hamburg and Turkish ports was able to grow against the trend despite the restrictions caused by Corona. In the first three quarters of 2020, a total of 114,000 TEU were handled in Hamburg in container traffic with Turkish ports. This is an increase of 18.8 percent.
Positive Development with Turkey
“We are pleased about the new shipping service in the Port of Hamburg. The development in seaborne foreign trade with Turkey is very positive. Even before Corona, in 2019, a new handling record was set in container traffic between Hamburg and Turkey with 132,000 TEU and a seaborne cargo handling of 2.2 million tons. We also expect another record result for 2020,” says Axel Mattern, Board Member of Hafen Hamburg Marketing.
A total of nine shipping services connect Hamburg with ports in Turkey. These include six container services, two multipurpose services, and one vehicle transport service. The container services and the vehicle transport service operate weekly. The multipurpose services call Hamburg monthly and additionally as needed. The transit times between Hamburg and the Turkish ports range from 10 to 14 days, depending on the traffic direction and rotation.
