Jan 7, 2021 at 7:00 PMThe announced acquisition of 50.01 percent by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG (HHLA) at the multifunctional terminal ‘Piattaforma Logistica Trieste’ (PLT) in the Italian port of Trieste was fully completed on January 7, 2021. The handling facility will henceforth operate under the name HHLA PLT Italy and is expected to commence expanded operations in February.
(Hamburg/Trieste) Following the approval of the Italian Council of Ministers and the fulfillment of further formal execution conditions, nothing stands in the way of the operation of the HHLA PLT Italy terminal in the Adriatic port of Trieste under the leadership of Hamburger Hafen und Logistik AG.
Angela Titzrath, CEO of HHLA: “We are pleased that the majority stake is now fully completed. At the contract signing on September 28 last year in Trieste, there was enormous support, especially from Italy, for our commitment in the Adriatic port. Since then, a team from HHLA International has been working intensively on integrating the Trieste terminal facility into the HHLA Group. Together with our Italian partners and the motivated workforce, we want to develop HHLA PLT Italy into a significant southern hub within our port and intermodal network.”
Promising Growth Perspective
Francesco Parisi, CEO of the Francesco Parisi Group, one of the co-shareholders of HHLA PLT Italy: “We are very pleased to have HHLA on board now. This offers PLT and the port of Trieste a very promising growth perspective. We thank HHLA for the intensive support that PLT has already received in recent months. This is a great incentive to continue working hard together to make this a success story.”
The terminal facility of HHLA PLT Italy is located within the free port zone of Trieste and has a total area of 27 hectares. In the northern part of the facility, general cargo traffic is already being handled, and logistical services are being provided. In the south, the new heart of the terminal is being developed: In the newly developed area at the deep-water site, container and RoRo traffic will be handled in the future. The necessary site preparation as well as the systemic, technical, and personnel requirements have been established.
The Infrastructure is Being Adapted
A ramp with a width of 35 meters is available for RoRo handling to accommodate the latest generation of RoRo ships deployed in the Mediterranean. Container handling is to be carried out from the sea side with port mobile cranes and in the warehouse with reach stackers. A first port mobile crane has already been installed. The delivery of another identical crane is expected in the first quarter of 2021. Additionally, four eco-efficient reach stackers have been ordered for warehouse handling, with delivery also expected in the first quarter.
The strategically advantageous location of the Adriatic port of Trieste offers very good growth potential in hinterland traffic. The multifunctional terminal has its own rail connection. Furthermore, HHLA’s rail subsidiary Metrans already connects the port of Trieste with its European intermodal network.
The Adriatic region has developed very dynamically in recent years. As the northernmost port in the Mediterranean, Trieste serves as the southern gateway to Central and Eastern Europe. HHLA positions itself with HHLA PLT Italy in a growth-oriented market that offers good development opportunities to participate in new and changing cargo flows and actively shape them.
