Dec 16, 2020 at 7:10 PMThe Logistics Cluster Region Basel is entering the years 2021 – 2023 with a new, innovative strategy and an additional partner on board. The focus is on the expansion of ‘Dialogue and Networking’, ‘Infrastructure and Spatial Planning’, ‘Education’, ‘Innovation and Digitalization’, and ‘Sustainable Logistics’. This new direction is also accompanied by a revamped online presence.
(Basel) The Logistics Cluster Region Basel – an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels (Cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Basel-Stadt) – has secured funding for the next three years. The Swiss Association for Vocational Education in Logistics is also expanding the partnership with a new member. To strengthen the logistics industry, the Logistics Cluster Region Basel has developed a new strategy until 2023. Five topics are at the forefront: ‘Dialogue and Networking’, ‘Infrastructure and Spatial Planning’, ‘Education’, ‘Innovation and Digitalization’, and ‘Sustainable Logistics’.
Logistics Needs Space
Handling and logistics areas are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive in the region. The consequence: Transport and logistics companies are being pushed into peripheral regions or neighboring countries. Deborah Strub, Chairwoman of the Logistics Cluster Region Basel: ‘If there are not enough areas available for handling and logistics services, the supply of goods cannot be ensured and carried out efficiently. The growing online trade exacerbates the situation.’ The Logistics Cluster aims to counteract this: ‘When a suitable area is transformed, we will contact the planning authorities early to communicate the needs of the logistics industry and secure areas for logistics.
Securing Tomorrow’s Skilled Workers
The education sector remains a focus in the new strategy. The Logistics Cluster is committed to ensuring that enough qualified skilled personnel are available in the logistics sector so that the industry can grow. Specific events will be organized to spark interest among students for a career in logistics.
Environmental Awareness Poses Risks and Opportunities
The Logistics Cluster also wants to respond to innovations in the field of sustainability with its strategy. Risks from stricter environmental regulations should be minimized, and opportunities in conjunction with technological development should be utilized. ‘We will provide entrepreneurs with knowledge and experience regarding new drive technologies. The transfer of knowledge from universities to companies, as well as the exchange among companies, is a priority,’ says Strub. This aims to make the Basel region a leader in ‘sustainable logistics’. Additionally, the Logistics Cluster wants to support companies with concrete offers in digital transformation so that they can fully exploit the potential of digitalization.
Logistics Hub Basel
‘With around 810 companies, 12,000 jobs, and an annual gross value added of 1.9 billion Swiss francs, Basel is the leading logistics hub in Switzerland and indispensable for the region. ‘To ensure that logistics companies in the region remain competitive and can successfully develop further, good framework conditions are essential,’ says Martin Dätwyler, Director of the Chamber of Commerce of both Basels. And that is exactly what the Logistics Cluster is working on with measures and ensuring the exchange within the industry, with politics, authorities, and society.
