Dec 14, 2020 at 6:52 PMLufthansa Cargo has been offering its customers the ability to easily determine the CO2 emissions of their goods during the booking process since November. With the summer flight schedule 2021, customers can offset their freight flights.
(Frankfurt) Since November, customers of Lufthansa Cargo can easily determine their CO2 emissions for the transportation of their goods during the booking process. This is made possible by the new online booking portal eBooking, which Lufthansa Cargo launched in November. With the integrated emissions calculator, all customers have the opportunity to calculate the CO2 emissions caused by transportation and offset them in the future. Lufthansa Cargo already conducted its first CO2-neutral freight cycle, fully covered by Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), together with DB Schenker at the end of November.
Start with the Summer Flight Schedule
Starting with the summer flight schedule, Lufthansa Cargo plans to regularly offer CO2-neutral air freight as a product for the shipping industry. The offer was jointly developed by Lufthansa Cargo and Compensaid, the central compensation platform of the Lufthansa Group. After customers have calculated their CO2 emissions, they can offset them by using Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). Additionally, it is also possible to compensate through reforestation projects. In the case of using SAF, Compensaid ensures that the corresponding sustainable fuel is purchased and refueled to offset the emissions generated. To achieve this, Compensaid works closely with Lufthansa Group Fuel Management and with SAF producers located worldwide. Digital technologies of the compensation platform launched in 2019 enable Compensaid to make the process from calculation to refueling transparent and efficient.
Commitment to Alternative Fuels
“Lufthansa Cargo supplies people and markets with urgent goods and raw materials. We are part of and a driver of globalization, which stands for economic progress and opens new opportunities for everyone. And this does not exclude sustainability. We will focus more on this – both economically and socially. In addition to investments in a modern freighter fleet, our commitment to alternative fuels also contributes to the sustainability goal ‘Climate Action’ of the United Nations. By enabling the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), we actively promote research in this area and can relieve the environment in the long term,” explains Peter Gerber, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo.
CO2-Neutral Aviation
“CO2 compensations in the business customer sector are an important and effective step towards CO2-neutral aviation,” says Gleb Tritus, Managing Director of Lufthansa Innovation Hub. “Through the larger B2B volumes, we increase demand and thereby promote awareness, availability, and cost-effectiveness of alternative fuels.”
SAF is blended with conventional kerosene as a so-called drop-in fuel. The amount of SAF corresponding to the fuel demand of a flight is injected into the refueling system at Frankfurt Airport. This means that the SAF is distributed across all flights that are subsequently refueled. However, the CO2 neutrality is attributed to that one flight.
