The solar-powered GPS modules were initially installed on 1,100 new swap bodies in October and November. The remaining 3,700 swap bodies in stock are to be equipped with the tracking technology by May 2021.
(Kleinostheim) “The new GPS tracking technology offers several advantages,” explains IDS Managing Director Dr. Michael Bargl. “With the GPS solar modules, the swap bodies can be located and tracked at any time. This creates transparency regarding arrival times of transports between the IDS depots and to the IDS hubs.”
Location Reporting Every 15 Minutes
How does it work? When loading shipments onto the swap body, all packages are scanned and ‘married’ with the swap body number. During transport, the GPS module reports the exact location of the swap body and thus the specific shipment to the IDS IT portal at least every 15 minutes. If a swap body is stuck in traffic or involved in an accident, monitors in the 50 IDS depots display the estimated arrival time and any potential delays. Customers of express shipments can be proactively informed, and unloading personnel can be optimally scheduled.
Administrative Relief
With the tracking of the swap bodies, they can no longer go missing. Additionally, thanks to the use of GPS solar modules, administrative tasks such as manual bookings in the swap body clearing system and daily physical inventory checks of the swap bodies in the depot are eliminated. The lithium-ion batteries are charged entirely without external power supply, using only solar energy via solar cells, and maintain large energy reserves – independent of temperature fluctuations and weather influences. Mounted on the roof of the swap body, they do not interfere with loading or unloading. Approximately 1,100 new swap bodies have now received their GPS tracker directly at the KRONE plant in Herzlake.
